Baubeginn Haikou Tower South on Hainan Island
Hainan, China – October 2016: Construction has started on Haikou Tower South, which lies in the new business quarter of the South China city of Haikou and is due to be completed by 2020.
At 428 m high, it is the tallest building on the island and marks the heart of the new central business district. The tower, along with green shapes and water, frames an expansive plaza alongside the Eastern Guo Xing Road, which is the main east-west axis of the city.
The form and structure of the tower are determined by the room schedule and an efficient loadbearing structure. Eight inclined mega-columns along the perimeter rotate around the central core and converge with one another at acute angles. Diagonal struts carry wind loads and torsional forces, forming rhomboid shapes in the facade.
The bottom two-thirds of the tower are planned for office use and the pinnacle will house a hotel. The office areas have long-span ceiling slabs and column-free internal spaces. Above the three-storey hotel lobby on the 71st floor, hotel rooms and a full height atrium extend from the 76th to the 100th floor. A sky lobby and viewing platform terminate the tower. The form of the pinnacle was inspired by the shape of a lotus flower.
The now steadily rising Haikou Tower South will be opposite the planned 429 m high Haikou Tower North. This tower, also designed by HENN, is similar in structure and facade to its partner and is due to be opened in 2021.

Baubeginn Haikou Tower South
