Two homes with distinctive personalities show just what’s possible when high-functioning design infiltrates the suburbs. At first glance, Newport Houses appear as one generous waterfront home – rich in contemporary expression – occupying two pairs of blocks on the waterfront, near Redcliffe, Qld.

East Room House is located in an established suburb in Brisbane, Australia’s inner north-east amongst traditional character homes. Instinctively, the architecture of the house draws on queues from its vernacular context.

Taringa House
The Taringa House, originally a worker’s cottage is located along Stanley Terrace, a traditional street lined with character housing. The program, driven by the desire to accommodate the majority of family activity within the addition, has generated two juxtaposed but contrasting building forms defined in this text as the ‘old’ and the ‘new’.

These buttresses, along with the tower and large concrete wall at the entry, give the home a castle-like resemblance. Set high on the hill the house looks over the property as if it is a castle looking over its territory.

This much-loved 1970s brick home had been left in a state of neglect. Some additions had been built to the rear of the property, which had made the interiors of the house very dark and enclosed, and had cut off the main living areas from the garden, where a swimming pool dominated the rear yard.
