Now in its 24th year, The American Architecture Awards were announced by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies—organizers of this annual prestigious program for Design Excellence and for the best and nest contributions to innovative contemporary American architecture.
The American Architecture Awards are the nation’s highest public awards given by a non-commercial, non-trade affiliated, public arts, culture and educational institution.
From a shortlist of over 300 buildings and urban planning projects, this year’s American Architecture Awards went to exceptional buildings designed for every stage of our lives: skyscrapers, corporate headquarters, governmental buildings, science and technology centers, transportation centers, airports, hotels, parks, pavilions, restorations and renovations, retail facilities, housing projects, private homes, schools, universities, art, cultural and health buildings, urban planning and landscape architecture, interiors, and other humanitarian and educational initiatives.
“The American Architecture Awards,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum are the nation’s highest public awards dedicated to cutting edge design, sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics that reflect the character of contemporary architecture of our times.”
“The Chicago Athenaeum, in collaboration with The European Center, has been celebrating the outstanding work of America’s top architecture offices for 24 years.“
“Our Museum’s public awards are regarded internationally as a mark of excellence, recognizing the best architecture, architects, landscape architects, and urban planners in the United States.”
“Each year, the Awards are judged against a range of criteria including design vision; innovation and originality; capacity to stimulate, engage and delight occupants and visitors; accessibility and sustainability; and how fit the building is for its purpose and the level of client satisfaction.”
“This year’s winning projects at large and small scales and in urban, suburban and rural settings, illustrates the value and impact that great design can bring to any setting and to all communities.”
“Every one of the 100 plus winning buildings and urban designs illustrate why American architecture continues to be cutting-edge and globally influential,” continues Narkiewicz-Laine
Of significant and important note, four American Architecture Awards were given for the preservation of iconic American buildings that reflect our nation’s highest and most dynamic cultural heritage:
American Architecture Awards 2018 Winners News
Eero Saarinen’s General Motors Design Auditorium of 1956 was handsomely and brilliantly restored to its original by SmithGroupJJR.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Union Temple of 1905 and 1908 in Oak Park, Illinois was magnificently and heroically restored to Wright’s original design by Harboe Architects.
Shapeshifter Reno, Nevada by OPA:
Another landmark, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, originally designed by James Renwick Jr., (1879) and now restored by Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects, is a stunning showcase of precision restoration that has rejuvenated the luster and of one the nation’s finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture.
The work carried out throughout the Cathedral shows subtle but extremely high-quality detailed design, coupled with diligent supervision of top-notch workmanship.
The architects were required to navigate a difficult balance between liturgy and tourism; their work inevitably meant the close co-ordination of a wide team of stakeholders and craftspeople, involving the orchestration of a multiple of modern and technological interventions into this famous New York landmark.
Also, beautifully restored is the Union Trust Building in Pittsburgh, originally designed by Frederick John Osterling (1915-1916) and now renovated by Elkus Manfredi Architects. The project is academically rigorous in terms of repairs, reversibility, and in the selection of new materials
Crest Apartments San Diego, California by Michael Maltzan Architecture:
“From a conservation perspective, these three awarded preservation projects are mature and confident statements of orderliness and precision,” continues Narkiewicz-Laine.
“The importance of the historic fabric in each example has been clearly understood to give the whole complex of buildings a new lease of life. These three projects exhibit careful and critical use of appropriate repairs bringing back the original stateliness of these now restored landmarks.”
Other awarded buildings, large and small, commercial and speculative, residential and private, institutional and governmental, civic and public spaces, skyscrapers, hotels, schools and universities, religious buildings, museums, libraries, airports, sports arenas, parking garages, hospitals and medical facilities, retail and hospitality, restaurants, corporate offices that signal the best and finest new buildings across the 50 States, as well as Australia, France, South Korea, China, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and Canada.
“Generally, the jury admired the skill and control the architects have demonstrated in realizing the client’s enormously complicated and demanding brief, while maintaining a rigorous and disciplined design plan and an elegant system to obtain the final end product.”
“These awarded projects for 2018 demonstrate that architectural skill can extend beyond the cityscape and the rural landscape through the detailed care taken in the organization of public and private spaces, spatial challenges, technical requirements, and engineering technologies with an admirable rigor and clarity,” continues Narkiewicz-Laine.
