Located in Shenzhen’s new CBD, the Ping An Finance Centre is Shenzhen’s tallest building. With over 100 office floors and a large podium containing retail and conference program, Ping An acts as the physical and iconic center of Shenzhen’s burgeoning CBD.

Located on Lot 1 of the Futian District, at the southwest corner of the intersection of Yi Tian Road and Fu Hua Road, the tower connects to neighboring commercial and residential properties, as well as to Shenzhen Line 1 Gou Wu Gong Yuan metro station.

The iconic stone and glass tower rises at the northeast corner of the site, anchoring the development. The tower’s four principle façades are sheathed in chevron-shaped stone verticals which extend from the building’s base. These stone verticals will house perimeter columns and be stitched together at the tower’s four corners by eight-storey diagonal braces.

The tower is connected to a podium containing retail and conference program to the south. Sheathed in glass and stone, the building is defined by a large central atrium, which serves as both a public vestibule and a sun-lit space for meeting, shopping and dining.

Five floors of retail shops terrace away from the tower, forming a large amphitheater-like space—the new center for the CBD.

Ping An Financial Center is among CNN’s Most Anticipated Buildings for 2016

The recently topped-out tower will be the fourth tallest in the world.

KPF’s Ping An Financial Center in Shenzhen, China has been named among CNN’s “9 New Buildings Set to Define Cities in 2016”.

The recently topped-out tower will be Shenzhen’s tallest building, and the fourth tallest in the world at its completion. With 100 floors and a large podium containing retail and conference program, Ping An will become the physical center of Shenzhen’s burgeoning Central Business District.

Sheathed in glass and stone, the tower is defined by a large central atrium, which will serve as both a public vestibule and a sun-lit space for meeting, shopping and dining. Five floors of retail shops and the tower’s terrace form a large amphitheater-like public space. The tower has been LEED Gold pre-certified.

Other projects on CNN’s list includes Santiago Calatrava’s World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York; Jean Nouvel’s The Louvre Abu Dhabi; and Herzog and de Meuron’s Tate Modern Extension in London.

The building is located within the Central Business District of Shenzhen in Futian. Its lot of a size of 18,931 square metres was purchased by Ping An Group via auction at a price of 1.6568 billion RMB on November 6, 2007. Its foundation stone was laid on August 29, 2009 and construction started in November the same year.

In March 15, 2013 the construction process was temporarily halted, due to the suspected use of concrete made with unprocessed sea sand, which could corrode the steel structure. Construction resumed on the building after sample testing.

On the morning of July 15, 2014, upon a 10-meter long steel column being lifted to place, the skyscraper exceeded 443.8 metres in height, surpassing the KK100 tower to become the tallest building in Shenzhen.

The building topped out on April 30, 2015 and became the second tallest skyscraper in China at a height of 599 metres. The original plan was to add a 60-metre antenna atop the building to surpass the Shanghai Tower and become the tallest building in China. However, in February 2015, it was decided that the antenna would not top the tower due to the possibility that it might obstruct flight paths.
