Bedroom design, home bed spaces guide
post updated 8 October 2026
Measure your room ; pick a focal point ; select a style ; choose furniture ; agree color scheme ; layer lighting & accents.
Designing a bedroom is about combining comfort, style, and function to create a restful and personal space. Whether you’re starting from scratch or updating your current room, here’s a complete guide on how to design a bedroom:
Bedroom design layout guide
1. START WITH THE BASICS
Measure Your Space
– Get exact dimensions (length, width, ceiling height).
– Note windows, doors, electrical outlets, and radiators.
Determine the Room Layout
Decide on a focal point (often the bed).
Make sure there’s enough circulation space (ideally 24–36″ around the bed).
Use tools like Roomstyler, Planner 5D, or SketchUp for layout planning.
2. DEFINE YOUR STYLE
Pick a style that reflects you:
– Modern: Clean lines, minimal color, sleek furniture
– Boho: Layered textures, earthy colors, plants
– Scandinavian: Light wood, white walls, cozy textiles
– Industrial: Metal elements, exposed brick, darker tones
– Traditional: Rich woods, symmetry, timeless patterns
Create a mood board with Pinterest or Canva to visualize your design.
3. CHOOSE A COLOR SCHEME
Pick Calming Colors
– Neutrals: White, beige, taupe, gray
– Cool tones: Light blue, sage green, lavender
– Warm neutrals: Terracotta, warm gray, dusty pink
Use the 60-30-10 rule:
– 60% dominant color (walls)
– 30% secondary (furniture/textiles)
– 10% accent (decor/accessories)
4. SELECT FURNITURE
Bed First
– Match the size to your room: Twin, Full, Queen, King
– Choose a style: Upholstered, wood, platform, storage bed
Other Essential Pieces
– Nightstands (ideally 24–28″ high)
– Dresser or wardrobe
– Bench or ottoman (at the foot of the bed)
– Desk or vanity (if space allows)
– Chair or reading nook
– Choose multi-functional furniture in small rooms (e.g., storage beds, wall-mounted desks).
5. LAYER LIGHTING
Use three layers:
– Ambient: Ceiling lights, chandeliers, recessed lighting
– Task: Bedside lamps, reading lights, vanity lighting
– Accent: LED strips, wall sconces, mood lights
– Use dimmers for flexibility and a relaxing atmosphere.
6. WINDOWS, CURTAINS & BLINDS
– Use blackout curtains for sleep or light-filtering sheers for softness.
– Layering curtains adds depth and insulation.
– Curtain rods should extend 4–6 inches beyond window width.
7. STORAGE SOLUTIONS
– Maximize space with:
– Under-bed storage drawers or bins
– Built-in wardrobes or closets
– Floating shelves or wall hooks
– Baskets for throw blankets and accessories
8. ADD TEXTURE AND PERSONALITY
– Bedding: Layer with throws, pillows, and soft duvets
– Rugs: Anchor the bed with a rug at least 8″x10″ for a queen bed
– Art: Add wall decor or a gallery above the bed
– Plants: Bring life and purify air (e.g., snake plant, pothos)
– Scent: Use candles, diffusers, or essential oils
BEDROOM DESIGN TIPS
– Keep clutter to a minimum—bedrooms should feel peaceful.
– Use mirrors to reflect light and make the room feel larger.
– Make sure nightstand height matches your mattress height.
– Choose comfortable bedding—thread count matters less than material quality (go for cotton or linen).

Home Bedroom Design Makeovers
Most of us will spend a significant portion of our lives in our bedrooms, with studies showing that we actually spend, on average, a third of our lives asleep. So with this in mind, making our bedroom a comfortable and relaxing environment is probably a very good idea.
A crucial element of any bedroom is the comfiness and appropriateness of the mattrress. They need to be replaced at regular intervals, certainly every five years. If replacing it is worth checking out Mattress Reviews online. And if you are making changes, then it could pay to consider how a spot of DIY could create a feeling of space, while potentially making it more attractive to future buyers.
So if you are looking to maximise your home’s value, what are the options?
Bedroom remodel – and reap the rewards
Kitchens are often seen as the first place to start when upgrading your house. However, bedrooms are another obvious way to make your home feel more liveable. And while there are many different levels you can aim for, the good news is that you can remodel your bedroom fairly simply with a little DIY and loving care.
First, think about breaking out the brushes. Painting your bedroom should be within the skill set of many of us, and can have an immediate impact. Opting for simple, pale colours can provide the backdrop for any other changes you want to make – and a neutral shade will be a bonus when the time comes to sell.
Create space – add value
Once you have given your room a lick of paint, it’s time to think about how you can make the space work harder for you. A simple way to provide a new area can be to use a curtain room divider – for example, to use an alcove as new storage space.
If you are really pushed for space, you could do away with the bed altogether – at least in terms of having it on display all the time. Rather than making your bed the focal point of the room, you could install a fold-up or wall bed. Retracting neatly into an alcove or cupboard, a wall bed is designed to be relatively simple to fit, at least for a handyman.
Fitted wardrobes can offer the best storage options and can be designed to fit around awkward angles, sloping ceilings and uneven walls, making the most of any space you have available. Sliding and bi-folding doors can save floor space, while careful use of glass and lighting can create a sense of interior space.
If you have a large bedroom, or an L-shaped space, you could also choose to create a walk-in wardrobe, which would be seen as a significant improvement by some buyers.
Bedroom design makeovers – Upgrading the master suite
Of course, if you have the money to make larger improvements to your bedroom, you could choose to install an ensuite bathroom. It’s thought that most families looking to buy a property almost expect two bathrooms, so this addition could potentially help to sway any potential buyers if you do decide to sell. Depending on your budget, there are options to stick to a basic, practical bathroom or take it a step further by adding attractive features such as under-floor heating and free-standing bath tubs.
So, when rethinking your bedroom space, bear in mind that substantial changes, such as fitted wardrobes or a luxury bathroom, can be expensive. It’s a good idea, before deciding on the scope of your improvements, to weigh up whether the initial cost will in fact reap any rewards, or if they will at least withstand the test of time.
It may be convenient to take out a loan to pay for these significant changes – though they could potentially add value to your home when the time comes to sell.
