A Natural Basin of Life

The natural Port of Izmit Bay is the transition area of a rich bio-diversity due to its specific location between Black Sea and Mediterranean Region.

Izmit basin, surrounded by lakes and forests is also a very sensitive area in ecological means concerning the wetlands, the agricultural lands, the canals and the bays within. Wetland of Izmit, with its mud and sand flats, gravel islands; its natural structure consisting of fresh water streams and natural vegetation is one of the most important intercontinental stops for the worldwide bird migration routes.

A Balanced City Development

The fracture of fault should be taken into account for the development plan. The preservation of the basin between Sapanca Lake and the Port of Izmit and the agricultural lands.

Rebuilding the Ecosystem

Re-establishing the perished ecosystem under the current urban life as a natural basin. Making connections with the ecosystem and the green spaces in the city.

Bringing Together the Existing and the Emerging Urban Life with the Nature

Since it is not possible to create a buffer zone in the city for the protection of the wetlands, the needed area and a new ecotone will be provided with the biotop islands built in the bay.
