Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre

Sheffield’s largest architecture practice, Bond Bryan, has received planning permission for its design for the £8.5 million Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) for the University of Sheffield, to be built on The Advanced Manufacturing Park, off the Parkway.

The decision, made by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, will see the construction of two 56-metre high wind turbines on the Sheffield/Rotherham border. The turbines, which will be visible from the M1, will generate power for the building, which is set to be one of the most environmentally sustainable in the region.

Destined to be seen as a ‘Factory for the Future’, not only will the work conducted here be highly advanced but the building design will also incorporate the latest environmentally sound construction techniques, will minimise material usage and maximise on-site energy generation from renewable sources.

Bond Bryan worked early on in the project with the Rocky Mountain Institute, the world leaders in green buildings to ensure leading edge environmental design.

It has been designed to be a totally carbon neutral factory building, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK.

The centre will house laboratories, small manufacturing units and research facilities that will see the AMRC become the world’s leading site for advanced manufacturing testing. Both Boeing and Rolls Royce have opened facilities at the AMRC.

The turbines will be visible for miles around and will come to symbolise the emphasis that Bond Bryan Architects, the region, the client and sponsors are placing on environmental issues.
