Menil Collection shortlists four architects
Josef Helfenstein, the director of the Menil Drawing Institute, has announced that four architecture practices have been shortlisted for the design of the museum’s new building.
Menil Drawing institute Building shortlist:
– SANAA from Tokyo
– David Chipperfield Architects from London
– Tatiana Bilbao from Mexico
– Johnston Marklee from Los Angeles
Each of them are to submit a project which will selected at the beginning of June 2012.
In February 2008, the Menil Collection built the Menil Drawing Institute and Study Centre, dedicated to the exhibition and study of drawing. Under the direction of Bernice Rose, the institute aims to gather a collection of works representative of contemporary and modern drawing, above all works dating from 20th century to today.
Drawing has always been a significant part of the Menil’s work. The first work that John de Menil bought was a watercolour by Cézanne, which he acquired during a business trip in 1945. This was soon followed by the purchase of works by other prestigious artists such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, and René Magritte. Today, the institute houses 1,200 works.
This collection is to be housed in a separate building on the Menil campus. Its major aim is to open up modern drawing to the public.

Dedicated to exhibiting and preserving the art collection of Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, the Menil Collection is widely recognized for its depth and diversity.
David Chipperfield Architects’ proposals for the future development of the museum campus suggest the placement of additional facilities – including galleries, a drawing institute, an auditorium, a café, bookshop, and archives – and green space within the existing site.
