Side x Side Retreat is a pair of neighboring retreat homes in Erath County, Texas, designed by Jeff Garnett Architect across two narrow, adjacent lots near the edge of a lake. Conceived as a unified architectural composition, the residences share a common language of proportion, materials and detailing while maintaining distinct identities and privacy for each family.

The constraints of the narrow homesites became a defining influence on the architecture. Long, linear floor plans make efficient use of each property while framing views of the surrounding landscape. Screened porches, covered terraces and sunrooms extend the living spaces outdoors, with carefully positioned openings capturing prevailing breezes, natural light and views beyond.

Native limestone walls form a gallery-like spine through each residence, organizing circulation, creating privacy and framing transitions between interior spaces and the landscape. A restrained palette of limestone, metal cladding and other durable, low-maintenance materials reflects the homes’ use as weekend retreats while establishing a natural connection to the Texas setting.

Rather than designing two identical residences, Jeff Garnett Architect approached Side x Side Retreat as two complementary homes in conversation with one another and their surroundings.

The result balances connection and privacy, efficiency and comfort, and architecture and landscape—offering a site-specific interpretation of contemporary Texas retreat living.
