Inspired by Sinatra’s Twin Palms, This Canadian Mid-Century Modern Masterpiece Remains Resonant
VANCOUVER, October 31, 2025 — West Coast Modern is delighted to announce that The Lakeberg Residence, a rare example of pioneering Palm Springs-style modernism in the forested lushness of West Vancouver, has been listed for sale.
When Richard Neutra arrived in Vancouver in 1946 to lecture local architects, his Californian ideas landed like a spark. Members of Thompson, Berwick & Pratt (TB&P), among others, absorbed his vision of glass, light, and landscape — and began adapting it to their own climate of forests and rain. Founded in 1908, TB&P helped define the skylines and communities of British Columbia and became the training ground for many era-defining architects, including Barry Downs, Arthur Erickson, Fred Hollingsworth, and Ron Thom.
If rather discreet and private from the onset, one can easily recognise the distinctive touches that characterised the work of TB&P in the Lakeberg Residence, whether it is in the house’s wide tar-and-gravel roof or its generous use of vernacular materials. Just like Frank Sinatra’s E. Stewart Williams-designed Twin Palms, the Lakeberg Residence features a distinctively lightweight breezeway leading up to the house, a kidney-shaped pool that resembles a piano and a vibrant, almost tropical foliage, on top of the essential post-and-beam structure and wide-spanning volumes typical of classic Mid-century Modern architecture.
Inside, and down a few steps leading to a light-filled sunken living room, a warm, honey-hued world of expansive volumes and delicate design details unfolds, revealing what the house has been keeping intact. The home’s meticulous use of indigenous materials is typical of British Columbian Mid-century architecture, although not usually in these ample proportions. It is reminiscent of the luxurious detailing found in homes such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House or Fallingwater.
Inspired in part by Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms (Palm Springs, California, USA), the Lakebergs pursued a similar ambition for their titular residence— commissioning a modern home that would rival the Californian icon in both cost and sophistication.
For more than sixty years, this alluring and playful sanctuary has been relished by a select few. Now, it is ready for its next custodian to not only preserve the glamour of the past, but to welcome the joys of the future.
The Lakeberg Residence is being listed for $4,950,000. Prospective buyers are invited to contact West Coast Modern to arrange a viewing.
