A Rare Erickson Experiment: Sound as Architecture
While Erickson is renowned for his innovative use of concrete, wood, and glass to harmonize natural elements, the Sound House is a rare exploration of how a predominantly wood structure can enhance acoustics. Although Erickson’s signature rough concrete treatment, first introduced in the 1964 Smith House II, appears in the interior walls for acoustic benefits, the home is primarily crafted from wood, further emphasizing his mastery of materials.
The home also serves as a precursor to Erickson’s later dramatic use of sculptural forms, such as the slanted roofline seen in the Catton House (1967). Alongside the celebrated MacMillan Bloedel Building (1965), which explores Erickson’s experimental use of concrete, the Sound House marks a pivotal moment in his architectural evolution.
Japanese Inspiration and Modernist Craftsmanship
Following a formative trip to Japan in 1961, Erickson began to distill his designs to express a single material—an influence that is evident in the Sound House. The home’s minimalistic use of wood, glass, and concrete creates a sculptural form reminiscent of the simplicity found in Japanese architecture.
This connection to Erickson’s Japan-inspired work makes the Sound House not only a residence but a living piece of architectural history, embodying the principles that shaped some of his most iconic designs.
West Coast Modern, Vancouver’s premier agents for design-led architectural homes, is proud to unveil a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a hidden architectural treasure by Canada’s most revered architect, Arthur Erickson. Tucked away behind towering hedges in Vancouver’s prestigious MacKenzie Heights, the Sound House—commissioned in 1965 and never before seen by the public—is now available for purchase. This is the only known Erickson home specifically designed for a musician, serving as a breathtaking intersection of sound, nature, and architecture.
A Hidden Gem in the World of Modernist Architecture
For decades, the Sound House remained concealed from public view, known only to a select few who were privileged to experience its one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Now, this 2,775 sq. ft. architectural masterpiece on a 6,514 sq. ft. lot is coming to light, offering architecture enthusiasts an unprecedented look at an undiscovered Erickson creation.
Nestled in Vancouver’s West Side, this three-level home was originally commissioned by the Metal family, with Nicholas Metal—an audiophile—requesting a design that would enhance the acoustic properties of the space. Erickson, famous for harmonizing natural surroundings with built environments, used innovative techniques to manipulate sound and light, crafting a sanctuary for the senses.
