Allambie Heights House, Sydney, NSW, Australia
This knockdown rebuild in Allambie Heights transforms a dated 1960s brick house into a contemporary coastal retreat, carefully designed to meet the lifestyle and needs of its owners. The new home embraces its elevated position, with planning centred on maximising ocean views, natural airflow, and a northern aspect.
At the heart of the design is a double-height living, dining, and kitchen space, creating a dramatic yet inviting hub. Full-height sliding doors open eastward to capture sea breezes and northward to extend the living areas onto a generous balcony, reinforcing a strong connection between indoors and outdoors.
The kitchen is designed with both function and discretion in mind, cleverly concealing a corridor that leads to two bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. Accessibility was a key priority, with a lift providing direct access from the ground-floor garage to the primary living spaces above. A self-contained granny flat sits alongside the garage, offering flexibility for guests or extended stays.
Externally, the home combines white brickwork with dark metal cladding, delivering a low-maintenance finish that is both modern and complementary to its coastal surroundings. The result is a functional, refined home that balances contemporary living with sensitivity to site and setting.
What was the goal of the Allambie Heights project?
The aim was to transform a dated 1960s brick home into a contemporary coastal retreat, tailored to its owners and their lifestyle.
How does the design respond to the site?
The elevated position was maximised through planning that captures ocean views, natural airflow, and a northern aspect. A double-height living, dining, and kitchen space sits at the heart of the home, opening east to sea breezes and north to a generous balcony.
What were some key design considerations?
Accessibility was prioritised, with a lift linking the garage to the main living spaces. A fully self-contained granny flat at ground level provides flexibility for guests or extended stays.
What defines the external character of the home?
Contrasting white brickwork and dark metal cladding deliver a robust, low-maintenance finish that complements the coastal context.
