AURUBIS ARCHITECTURAL NORDIC BRASS TOWNSCAPE

Lund Cathedral Visitor Centre
The new Domkyrkoforum visitor centre, facing the Cathedral in the Swedish city of Lund, uses Aurubis Architectural’s Nordic Brass panels to create a series of contemporary forms, generating new vistas and public spaces within its historic setting.

Designed by architect Carmen Izquierdo, the brass and glass intervention links together several old buildings to form a unified complex. It presents a strongly-defined entry forecourt to the street with a Nordic Brass clad canopy, simply continuing the existing roof line, then continues back to the cathedral square, terminating with the auditorium and its iconic funnel window reaching up towards the cathedral towers. Nordic Brass was chosen by the architect for the new building’s external skin as “a natural material that gives a rich, vibrant surface. As the material mellows with age, the building will gradually blend in with the townscape.”
Other copper alloys are also available, in addition to Nordic Brass: the new Nordic Bronze and innovative Nordic Royal – an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. Aurubis Architectural’s range of surfaces includes Nordic Green and Nordic Blue variable intensities of pre-patination, developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world.
There are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets, enabling them to be used for long-strip installation techniques. Other surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper with either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment.
