4 February 2015 – The recently opened Vital Álvarez-Buylla public hospital in Mieres (Asturias, Spain) features a forward-thinking design that offers both aesthetic appeal and significant technical and functional benefits for a healthcare environment. The new 28,000 square metre health facility has created 120 rooms with a capacity for 234 beds and the elegant interiors include over 500 installations made from DuPont™ Corian®, strategically located for optimum benefit.

As part of an innovative scheme, project architect Verónica Durán Sela designed specialised furniture that maximises the versatility and performance of the renowned high tech solid surface. In addition to meeting the specific functional needs of the hospital, these unique designs set a new benchmark within the public healthcare sector in Spain. Work on the project was carried out by GISPASA, a public infrastructure and procurement company serving the Principality of Asturias
DuPont™ Corian® has been used to make a wide variety of installations, ranging from reception desks and examination facilities to surgical scrub amenities, baby baths and surfaces for phlebotomy rooms and paediatric wards. Corian® has also been specified for birth preparation units, clinical care units and multiple further fixtures.

Architect Verónica Durán Sela explains that she chose Corian® for its proven technical characteristics and its up-to-date compliance with the specific regulations that apply in hygiene-critical environments: “Being a solid and homogenous material, it is guaranteed to be durable, chemically resistant and water repellent, which are fundamental qualities where hospital equipment is concerned.”
Durán Sela adds that the material provides the highest level of security in an environment such as this, because “it is a non-porous and seamless material, easy to clean and disinfect, with a proven track record of performance in hospitals.” These advantages make DuPont™ Corian® particularly valuable when it comes to the healthcare sector.
