New Residence in Preston
An eight-acre site filled with tall fir trees was designated as a tree preserve, with the owners committed to protecting those trees. A new home was constructed within an existing clearing, with each room and window framing different views of the trees.
The three-part form projects the living and dining room out among the trees, with glass on three sides. Windows need no protection from the sunlight filtered by the trees, and there are no neighbors to view in.
The exterior is clad with rugged granite, cedar shingles, and metal roofing and windows, with accenting fiber cement panels. The interior palette repeats some of the same panels, combined with hardwoods, limestone, and granite. Landscaping focused on restoring native plants.
House in the Trees: Set in eight acres of protected forest above the old Preston sawmill, the 4000 square foot, three-level home is planned for minimum impact on the site, by taking advantage of a small, existing clearing. The exterior is made from rugged stone, concrete, and cedar shingles, with sleeker materials inside.
