The Centre for Timber Engineering at Edinburgh Napier University is holding a one-day conference on Friday 24 April 2009 in the headquarters of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. Entitled “Cross Laminated Timber: architecture, engineering and construction opportunities”, the event has been prompted by the significant level of interest shown in this particular product by construction industry professionals throughout the UK and by the many questions on the subject that have been raised to CTE by this group.

The conference therefore aims to clarify what is meant by the term ‘Cross Laminated Timber’, how it is manufactured, what the architectural and engineering design benefits are to be gained from using it, and the technical issues involved in the construction process. Topics to be covered include CLT’s acoustic properties, airtightness, assembly & installation, building regulations & standards, carbon sequestration, connections, detailing, durability, fire resistance, glues, hygroscopicity, lamella thicknesses, life cycle, manufacture, recycling, shrinkage, specification, strength, stiffness, surface finishes, sustainability, thermal properties, timber certification.
