Michael Russell, Minister for the Environment launched the programme at Napier University on 12 December. The publication, compiled and written by Peter Wilson in partnership with Forestry Commission Scotland, illustrates 90 exemplar projects in Scotland. A useful guide focusing on practical issues such as sourcing and using the principal scottish species is also available.

The aim of the programme is to contribute to the sustainable development of Scotland’s economy by enabling the timber growing and processing sectors to find the highest value and most appropriate end market for Scotland’s timber.

Mr Russell said: “The Timber Development Programme will add value to this important sector of Scotland’s economy. The outputs of many of the initiatives will contribute significantly to Scotland’s response to climate change by encouraging more use of timber as a renewable resource in construction and minimising the impact of timber transport on our environment. I am particularly encouraged by the level of enthusiasm and support from the timber industry for this initiative.”
