Architecture in Harmony with the Landscape

The CC House, also known as Quinta dos Carvalhos, is a project that stands out for its profound harmony between architecture and nature. Set on a two-hectare plot in the Leiria region, the house was designed with an unwavering respect for the surrounding environment, where the built structure does not impose itself on the landscape but rather adapts to it. The result is an organic and sensitive integration that transforms the house into a refuge where the natural and the constructed coexist in perfect harmony.

The layout of the four buildings that make up CC House—Garage, Barn, Bell House, and Black Bird House—was carefully planned to preserve the site’s original topography. The volumes were strategically positioned on naturally formed plateaus, developing on a single level to minimize visual impact. The choice of materials—concrete, wood, and zinc—reflects the pursuit of a refined architectural language, where simplicity highlights the site’s intrinsic beauty.

Every detail of the project reinforces the connection between architecture and nature. The construction process, spanning over eight years, is a testament to the care and dedication invested in this endeavor. Preserving the existing vegetation was an absolute priority, with the buildings carefully designed to embrace the centuries-old trees, avoiding any aggressive intervention in the land. The orientation of the buildings and the placement of openings were meticulously planned to maximize natural light and promote cross-ventilation, creating comfortable spaces that are perfectly adapted to the local climate.

The client, a native of the region with a deep understanding of the landscape, currently lives and works in Lisbon, where he manages a law firm. He saw this project as an opportunity to reconnect with his roots and rediscover the serenity of the countryside, far from the hustle and bustle of urban life. More than just a house, the CC House represents a return to origins and a commitment to the essence of the place.

The surrounding natural environment played a key role in every design decision. One of the challenges was managing the dense tree canopy, primarily composed of cork oaks and holm oaks, whose leaves accumulate on the ground during the colder months. To address this issue, it was crucial to incorporate an efficient self-cleaning system and rainwater drainage into the roof design.

The chosen solution consisted of sloped zinc-clad roofs, whose inclination, combined with the action of wind and rainwater, allows leaves to be naturally removed. They are directed to the ground, where they can be easily collected by the maintenance team. This technical approach ensures not only the functionality and longevity of the roofs but also the harmonious integration of the buildings into the landscape.

Despite the serene atmosphere and neutral color palette of the property, a few design pieces play a prominent role, introducing an artistic and expressive discourse. Many were acquired by the client over the years, while others were selected specifically for this project. Among them, the Bull & Stein apple sculpture (Artist Edition by Bruno Jorge Monteiro e Silva – Porto and Apple Sculpture by Lisa Pappon – São Paulo, Brazil), placed next to the Pool House, stands out. With its vibrant colors, this piece intentionally contrasts with the site’s natural tones, asserting itself as a focal point of artistic expression within the architectural ensemble.

At CC House, architecture does not seek to dominate the landscape but rather to engage in a subtle and respectful dialogue with it. The project reflects an approach where the built environment adapts to the natural surroundings, ensuring that the house not only inhabits the land but truly understands and celebrates it.

A CC House, também conhecida como Quinta dos Carvalhos, é um projeto que se destaca pela harmonia profunda entre a arquitetura e a natureza. Situada num terreno de aproximadamente dois hectares, na região de Leiria, a obra nasce de um respeito inabalável pelo meio envolvente, onde o edificado não se impõe sobre a paisagem, mas antes se molda a ela. O resultado é uma integração orgânica e sensível, que transforma a casa num refúgio onde o natural e o construído coexistem em perfeita sintonia.

A implantação dos quatro edifícios que compõem a CC House—Garage, Barn, Bell House e Black Bird House—foi cuidadosamente planeada para preservar a topografia original do terreno. Os volumes foram estrategicamente posicionados sobre os plateaus naturalmente formados, desenvolvendo-se num único piso para minimizar o impacto visual. A escolha dos materiais—betão, madeira e zinco—reflete a busca por uma linguagem arquitetónica depurada, onde a simplicidade enfatiza a beleza intrínseca do local.

Cada detalhe do projeto reforça a ligação entre a arquitetura e a natureza.

A cronologia da construção, que se estendeu por oito anos, é um testemunho do cuidado e da dedicação que marcaram este processo. A preservação da vegetação existente foi uma prioridade absoluta, com as construções moldando-se às árvores centenárias e evitando qualquer intervenção agressiva no território. A orientação dos edifícios e a disposição das aberturas foram criteriosamente pensadas para maximizar a entrada de luz natural e favorecer a ventilação cruzada, criando espaços confortáveis e perfeitamente adaptados ao clima local.

O cliente, natural da região e profundo conhecedor da paisagem, vive e trabalha atualmente em Lisboa, onde gere um escritório de advocacia. Viu neste projeto a oportunidade de reconectar-se com as suas raízes e redescobrir a serenidade do campo, longe da agitação dos grandes centros urbanos. Mais do que uma casa, a CC House representa um regresso às origens e um compromisso com a essência do lugar.

A envolvente natural desempenhou um papel central em todas as decisões projetuais. Um dos desafios foi a gestão da cobertura arbórea densa, composta essencialmente por sobreiro e carvalho, cujas folhas se acumulam no solo durante os meses mais frios. Para responder a esta questão, foi essencial garantir que as coberturas dos edifícios incorporassem um sistema eficiente de auto-limpeza e escoamento de águas pluviais.

A solução adotada recaiu sobre coberturas inclinadas revestidas a zinco, cuja inclinação, aliada à ação do vento e da água da chuva, permite a remoção natural das folhas. Estas são projetadas para o solo, onde podem ser facilmente recolhidas pela equipa de manutenção. Esta abordagem técnica garante não apenas a funcionalidade e a longevidade das coberturas, mas também a integração harmoniosa do edificado na paisagem.

Apesar da atmosfera de serenidade e neutralidade cromática da propriedade, algumas peças de design assumem um papel de destaque, trazendo consigo um discurso artístico e expressivo. Muitas delas foram adquiridas pelo cliente ao longo da sua vida, enquanto outras foram escolhidas especificamente para este projeto. Entre elas, destaca-se a maçã da Bull & Stein (Artist Edition de Bruno Jorge Monteiro e Silva – Porto e Apple Sculpture de Lisa Pappon – São Paulo, Brasil), situada junto à Pool House. Com as suas cores vibrantes, esta peça rompe intencionalmente com a paleta natural do lugar, assumindo-se como um ponto de contraste e expressão artística no conjunto arquitetónico.

Na CC House, a arquitetura não pretende dominar a paisagem, mas sim dialogar com ela de forma subtil e respeitosa. O projeto reflete uma abordagem onde o construído se adapta ao natural, garantindo que a casa não apenas habita o território, mas verdadeiramente o entende e celebra.
