Flinders Street Station People’s Choice

Flinders Street Station People’s Choice vote ignites public imagination

Thursday 1 August 2013 – More than 15,500 votes have been cast so far in the People’s Choice Award of the Flinders Street Station Design Competition, Premier Denis Napthine announced today. “The response to the People’s Choice vote has been fantastic with thousands of people providing feedback and selecting their favourite design since voting opened last Tuesday,” Dr Napthine said. “More than 140,000 people have visited www.voteflindersst.com over the last nine days and clocked up more than 1.3 million page views. In the first 24 hours the website accounted for one third of total Victorian Government online traffic.

“Younger people have really taken to the People’s Choice with 77 per cent of voters aged under 40. Large numbers of voters are from the inner city and major regional centres such as Geelong and Ballarat. Furthermore, 55% per cent of voters are men.

“Social media has also played a big role in spreading the word about the competition with more than half of the visitors to the voting website being referred from Facebook or Twitter.
“Interestingly, what we are seeing in the statistics and hearing anecdotally is that many people are taking their time to investigate the designs – often visiting several times before making their vote.

“The People’s Choice has sparked healthy debate about the competition and designs across the community and it’s been exciting to see people get so engaged in talking about the future of our beloved station,” Dr Napthine said.
Minister for Major Projects David Hodgett said the Flinders Street Station Design Competition was capturing international attention.

“With some of the best architecture firms in the world amongst the shortlist it isn’t surprising that the world is taking some notice. We have now received votes from more than 148 countries around the world including the U.K., US.A, Japan and as far afield as Azerbaijan and Rwanda,” Mr Hodgett said.

“As the Melbourne Open House event last weekend proved, Melbourne has a culture of design and it’s great to see this competition promoting that to the world.
“Voting closes on Monday August 5th, and I encourage all Melburnians to jump online, have a look at the six exciting new designs, and share their views on the future of Melbourne’s iconic station”.

Flinders Street Station designs Revealed

Tuesday 23 July 2013 – The six shortlisted designs of the Flinders Street Station Design Competition have been revealed for the first time with Premier Denis Napthine today launching the People’s Choice component of the competition.

“From today everyone can inspect the designs and cast their vote. I encourage all Victorians to participate and I think they will be excited by what they see,” Dr Napthine said.

“From the very beginning, the Victorian Coalition Government aimed to run a competition that encompassed not just Australian designs, but the best ideas from around the world to restore and reinvigorate the whole 4.7 hectare station precinct.

“All six of these fantastic designs re-imagine Flinders Street as more than just a station; they are visions for a whole new riverside precinct for Melbourne.

“They are, each in their own way, bold statements that challenge us to think of Flinders Street as an integrated part of Melbourne and its surrounding areas, such as Federation Square, Southbank and the Arts Precinct.

“Importantly, these designs also protect what we love about Flinders Street Station. The existing building is one of Melbourne and Victoria’s most recognisable landmarks and the Coalition Government is committed to its preservation.

“At the same time, we need to consider designs that improve the transport function of the station and we will be asking people to take this into consideration when voting for the People’s Choice Award,” Dr Napthine said.

Minister for Major Projects David Hodgett said the People’s Choice Award voting was a unique opportunity for people to get involved in the design competition.

“We want people to think about all aspects of the designs – this is more than a beauty contest,” Mr Hodgett said.

“The public will see the same plans, images, videos and material that have been provided to competition jury so they can make an informed decision for the People’s Choice Award.

“This award is also about hearing what the community thinks is important for Flinders Street. Feedback gathered through the voting will be used to develop and refine future plans for the station.

“Melbourne is a city that loves good design and vigorous debate, so please log on to the voting site and let us know what you think,” Mr Hodgett said.

Flinders Street Station Design Competition enters the home straight The Victorian Coalition Government’s design competition to re-imagine Flinders Street Station has entered its final phase with the six shortlisted competitors submitting their final designs to be judged, Minister for Major Projects David Hodgett announced today.

“The six shortlisted entries from both Australia and around the world have spent the last three months developing detailed plans for the station and are now ready to face the jury,” Mr Hodgett said.

“Later this month the jury will sit to decide the competition winner. Competitors will present their designs to the jury, who will then go into camera to make their final choice.

“On Tuesday 23 July, everyone will get their chance to see the designs and have their say by voting in the People’s Choice Award.

“Using a unique online system, voters will be encouraged to think about all aspects of each of the designs, and give a considered response in keeping with the holistic nature of the competition.

“This is the culmination of over a year’s work for the competitors and I know people are as keen as I am to see the designs.

“It is going to be an exciting and probably controversial month as people have their say and debate the merits of the various designs,” Mr Hodgett said.

Fantastic mix of local and international talent shortlisted for Flinders St Station Design Competition

Sunday 14 October 2012 – The shortlisted architects for the Flinders Street Station Design Competition represent a fantastic mix of local and international talent, the Minister for Major Projects Dr Denis Napthine announced today.

“This competition has always been about finding the best local and international talent to re-invigorate Melbourne’s iconic Flinders Street Station precinct and looking at this shortlist I think we’ve managed to do that,” Dr Napthine said.

The shortlisted designers are: (listed in order of registration)

• HASSELL + Herzog & de Meuron (Melbourne and Switzerland)
• NH Architecture (Melbourne)

“The short list covers some of the world’s best architects such as Hassell + Herzog & De Meuron and Zaha Hadid, renowned local firms Ashton Raggatt McDougall and NH Archtiecture and emerging talents Eduardo Velasquez, Manuel Pineda and Santiago Medina from Columbia.

“Between them, this group is responsible for some of Melbourne and the world’s most renowned buildings including Hamer Hall, Beijing’s National Stadium used in the 2008 Olympics and Rome’s Museum of XXI Century Arts.

“Judging from their previous work this is a very exciting group of architects and I am looking forward to finding out more about their visions for the Flinders Street Station precinct.

“The shortlisted entrants now have six months to develop their ideas and attend various technical briefings and workshops before Stage 2 of the competition closes on 4 July 2013.

“Following this, final designs will be put on public display for the people’s choice voting while the competition jury meets again to select a winner,” Dr Napthine said.

Competition jury chair and Victorian State Government Architect Professor Geoffrey London said the jury was impressed by the immense amount of work undertaken by the 117 submitting teams.

“Given the complexity and scale of the design challenge, the high overall quality of submissions made the jury’s task of short-listing a difficult one,” Professor London said.

“However after carefully applying the competition evaluation criteria, the jury is confident that the six short-listed teams represent the strongest propositions for the redevelopment of this precinct, much-loved Melbourne icon and intensely used transport hub.

“The jury looks forward, with great anticipation, to see how each of the six Stage 1 design concepts evolves over the months ahead,” Professor London said.
