Whitworth Art Gallery Competition Shortlist
Shortlist announced – Whitworth Art Gallery Competition
A shortlist has now been selected for the competition to design a new extension and remodelling of the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester.
139 expressions of interest were received at the first stage with ten practices longlisted to attend interviews with the jury panel. Interviews were held on the 29 & 30 July following which the jury panel selected five practices to go through to the design phase of the competition.
Whitworth Art Gallery Competition Shortlisted Architects
The shortlisted architect practices now have until mid September 2009 to work on their concept designs. A public exhibition of the schemes will then be held at the Whitworth Art Gallery followed by final presentations to the jury panel and selection of a winner in early November.

Whitworth Art Gallery Competition Longlist
The RIBA is delighted to announce the longlist for the competition to design a new extension and remodelling of the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester. The first stage of the competition attracted a phenomenal response with 139 expressions of interest received. Whitworth Art Gallery were delighted with the response and quality of applications.

All ten practices will now attend an interview with the jury panel from which a shortlist of five practices will be selected to go through to the design phase of the competition.

University of Manchester Architectural Competition
This new competition seeks an architect for the design of a new gallery extension and alteration of internal and external spaces within the Grade II listed Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. The architectural competition is being organised by the RIBA Competitions Office with funding support from the Friends of the Whitworth and is the first stage of a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project.
The project vision is to extend the South-west facing side of the Gallery adjacent to Whitworth Park to expand the space to display and study the collection, improve facilities for visitors and improve the efficiency of the existing building. Initial application will be by expression of interest. A shortlist of 5 practices will be shortlisted to produce concept designs and will each receive an honorarium of £5,000.
