The Butterfly and the Dodecagon Residence
Design: Scrafano Architects
Location: Los Angeles, California, USA
The The Butterfly and the Dodecagon Residence is mid-century modern residence, originally one-story and built in 1960, is located high in the hills overlooking the city of Los Angeles.
The project includes an extensive interior remodel and modernization, and a new second floor addition with a butterfly roof that gestures to the sky and allows for unobstructed views to the Pacific Ocean and Downtown Los Angeles. The first floor remodel exposed and restored the vaulted dodecagon ceiling, and opened up the living, dining, kitchen and bar areas.
The private quarters, which comprise four bedrooms and three baths, now have raised ceilings with floor to ceiling glass windows. Each bedroom suite was opened to access a private outdoor garden area.
A new floating wood stair brings natural light into the center of the residence, and leads up to the second floor addition that contains the master suite, private living space, office and a gym.
Large decks throughout allow for expanded outdoor living and capitalize on the panoramic views. The exterior environment provides spaces for entertainment and intimacy, capturing the potential of every square inch of the property. Beginning with an elevated entry court experience, the transition from public street to private oasis continues through the intimate kitchen garden.
A grove of palms cradle the unique living area, hinting at the California seascape while the juxtaposed openness of the pool and rear garden capture the expansiveness of the city.
