27 Jul – 2 Nov 2014

Following last year’s exhibition entitled Estuary, theMuseum of London Docklands is following up its interest in the water and the city of London by launching its multi-media art exhibition, Bridge.  The press event took place on the warm and hazy morning of 19 June aboard the Cyclone Clipper, which took its passengers first upriver from London Bridge City Pier to Vauxhall and back downriver to Tower Pier where the event terminated.

Blackfriars Railway Bridge
As part of the Thameslink Programme, the platforms at Blackfriars station were extended across the Thames and partially supported by the 1864 bridge piers. The project was designed by Jacobs and Tony Gee & Partners. The bridge has the first train platform on the River Thames. It also has a roof covered with photovoltiac solar panels – the largest of only two solar bridges in the world (the other being Kurilpa Bridge in Australia). Other green improvements include sun pipes and systems to collect rain water.

Hay’s Galleria
Hays Galleria Hays Galleria Hays Galleria
– major riverside tourist attraction on the Jubilee Walk is situated on the south bank of the River Thames. Originally a warehouse and associated wharf (Hay’s Wharf) for the port of London, it was redeveloped as a visitor attraction in the 1980s.
– during the nineteenth century, the wharf was one of the chief delivery points for ships bringing tea to the Pool of London. At its height, 80% of the dry produce imported to London passed through the wharf, and on this account the Wharf was nicknamed ‘the Larder of London

– redevelopment by Twigg Brown Architects
– permanently closing the dock gates, covering the dock with a floor
– enclosing the entire space with a roof, reminiscent of the Victorian railway termini of the same period, to create the galleria
– Grade II listed
– in a fountain at the centre of the Galleria is a 60 ft moving bronze sculpture of a ship
