Eva Jiricna Architects demonstrates the art of glass in new Mayfair jewellery store
Eva Jiricna Architects have completed a new flagship store for the 200 year old heritage jewellery brand Boodles, in the heart of the Mayfair conservation area.
The architects worked closely with the client to ensure that every detail is bespoke and reflects the values embedded in this historic company.
The new store required an ingenious design solution to connect two separate shops on parallel streets. Eva Jiricna Architects have created one continuous space with several level changes, and two separate entrances. A central roof light draws precious London daylight into the central space deep within the floor plan.
Changes in levels are mediated vertically by a dramatic curved glass stair, and horizontally by a 5 metre glass bridge. The staircase is both elegant and a feat of engineering, a visually light and ephemeral structure. The bridge is flanked on one side by three vitrines, thus using the crossing as an opportunity to create a dramatic display for the jewellery.
The combination of translucent, transparent and reflective materials, with additional daylight, creates an ever-changing palette of shades and shadows. Extra sparkle is added by a glass chandelier suspended over 4.5 m in front of a mirrored wall, giving an extra depth to the intimate space. The design of the chandelier was developed in collaboration with Lasvit; hundreds of cut crystals and hand blown pieces are lit by a myriad of colour-changing fibre optics.
Carefully selected materials used throughout the store create a subtle but appropriate backdrop for the jewellery displayed in freestanding counters and wall cabinets. A varied retail experience for clients is offered via a range of traditional selling counters alongside more informal seating on luxurious sofas or completely secluded spaces, partially screened from the main areas.
Eva Jiricna Architects has collaborated with Boodles on numerous refurbishments for over 19 years, most recently on a new unit in Harrods, the Savoy Hotel and Sloane Street, and are currently working on their new flagship premises in Manchester.
Eva Jiricna: ” Our long standing relationship with Boodles has seen us collaborate on eleven stores, consistently innovating our designs to keep the company’s image current, whilst reflecting the timeless appeal of the Boodles brand. Each store is a new story giving us the opportunity to constantly revise our design concepts”
James Amos, Boodles Director: “We were delighted with Eva Jiricna’s plans for our new Boodles Bond Street flagship and I find it really exciting to be able to walk onto the shop floor and see our customers enjoying the whole Boodles experience now that it is finished. The design is modern yet welcoming, which we think reflects our brand and the use of space, glass and mirrors has created a really interesting aesthetic.
Along with our private VIP room and downstairs consultation area, we have also created a ‘Boodles Apartment’ upstairs in Albemarle Street; With a relaxed interior, this is the perfect place for us to entertain clients and friends of the brand, for events and private collection viewings. It feels a bit like welcoming them into the Boodles home.”
