Sheffield Festival Centre Building

Architecture firm Jason King Associates has been selected as one of six finalists in the open, international architecture competition for the Sheffield Festival Centre. This British architecture competition is organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Competitions Office on behalf of Sheffield Media Centre Ltd. and seeks designs for a new, circa £3 million media centre building to extend the facilities provided by The Showroom cinema and Workstation cultural industries business centre.

The new building will be located directly opposite the newly redeveloped Sheffield railway station and Sheaf Square and will occupy a key gateway location to the city centre. The international competition attracted entries from throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

Sheffield Festival Centre competition

The Sheffield Festival Centre is a media centre and creative work space facility and urban gateway building, a landmark at the entrance to the city and a national icon for cinema and the media industries. Activity within the building shows through the billowing, translucent, ETFE ‘pillow’ facade, which changes with the light during the day. At night the facade has an integrated LED display system for an urban scale, graphic interface, signage and lighting system.

The new project extends cinema and new media into the urban realm – the facade projects physically into the square and projects media into it, turning the square into an urban auditorium. The new building utilizes the latest sustainable materials and technologies.
