1 North Bank Sheffield
At 1 Northbank, Sheffield the client’s brief called for over 75,000ft² (7000 m²) of office space that would exploit the river frontage and meet the council’s aspirations for the regeneration of the wider area.
The RIBA Jury commented “This speculative office is a new architectural landmark in Sheffield, worthy of its city gateway location. Notable civic gestures include the careful scaling to stitch the building into the existing context … and the lifting up of the riverside frontage, to create new links to and from the Don riverside walks. The composition is further enhanced by meticulous detailing, with the arrays of bespoke solar shading providing character, depth and delight.”

STRIKING NEW OFFICE BUILDING COMPLETES IN SHEFFIELD
A prestigious new office building in Sheffield, designed by BDP for specialist regeneration developer Priority Sites, has just been completed.
The 61,000sq-ft office scheme in the historic Wicker area of the city is the first phase of a masterplan, also carried out by BDP, for a former industrial site, bounded on one side by a neglected stretch of the river Don. The masterplan suggested high quality office buildings and residential development which would act as a catalyst for the regeneration of a wider city quarter.
The first phase speculative office building called 1 North Bank is a striking five storey office building with a flexible plan and two reception areas and two circulation cores to allow a variety of sublets. The accommodation comprises clear floor plates arranged in a shallow ‘U’ with the long side parallel to the street and a short return along the river. The riverside frontage is raised two storeys off the ground. This raised ‘pod’ forms a public space at ground level and creates a dramatic and expressive landmark which together with other new developments will create a significant urban gateway into the Riverside Quarter.
BDP architect director Stephen Marshall said “The completion of the whole North Bank development, through its incorporation of office space, cafes and housing will reinvent this part of Sheffield as a safe and lively destination within which to live and work. The emphasis on high quality architectural design from the outset will transform perceptions of the area and can already be seen to be impacting upon emerging proposals.”
BDP was masterplanner, architect, civil & structural engineer, building services engineer, landscape architect, transport planner, sustainability and acoustic consultant for this £10m project (construction cost). The QS was Bucknall Austin (Sheffield office) and the contractor – Bowmer & Kirkland.
