Snail House, Haryana, North India
At first glance, the elements of a snail, a sitar, and the sea may seem worlds apart, but together, they form the heart and soul of this home. Designed for a family of three—a merchant navy officer, his sitarist wife, and their young child—this house embodies their desire for warmth, intimacy and connection, despite the long months of separation. It is a place where time seems to slow down, wrapping its inhabitants in a shell of comfort, much like the creature that lends the house its name.
Snug yet Spacious
Built on 240 square meters of land, the design aims to create open, relaxing spaces within a compact footprint. The house balances spaciousness with intimacy, reflecting a sense of openness while maintaining a strong connection among the family members.
Drawing inspiration from the serene peace of Kerala and Bali, the clients envisioned a home that offered the same relaxed ambience where they could unwind and escape the stresses of daily life. The house is filled with green spaces, fresh air and all while maintaining privacy. The design makes the most of natural light, with large glass windows to ensure every room is bathed in sunlight during the day, eliminating the need for artificial lighting until dusk.
The interiors feature a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic, emphasizing natural materials, wooden flooring, and a neutral palette. The design prioritizes functionality and subtlety, with simple, clean lines and minimalist features that offer elegance and ease of maintenance. The overall ambience is one of simple sophistication, creating a warm, timeless home.
A Courtyard Where Melodies Flow
The house is planned in the form of a grid, all planned around the central courtyard that is positioned parallel to the living and dining areas. The kitchen at the back gives a whole view of the house and the gardens and serves as a vantage point from where the mom can watch over her young child who can play freely and still be in sight.
Measuring 12’ by 18’, the courtyard is designed as the heart of the house – a space where the lady of the house can practice her sitar, a play area for the child and where the whole family can gather for mehfils of music, laughter and love.

The Snail’s Ascent
The spiral staircase slowly unfurls, enveloping the home with its graceful curves. As one ascends from the ground floor to the first floor, the deliberate pace of the climb mirrors the slow, measured movement of a snail. Each step invites a pause, a moment to absorb the beauty of the space, making the simple act a contemplative journey in itself.
Inspired by the natural form of a snail’s shell, this unique staircase expands from 3 feet at the base to 9 feet at the top, blending sculptural elegance with functionality. Drawing influence from the works of Frank Gehry and Le Corbusier, particularly Gehry’s sculptural staircases at the Ontario Art Gallery, the staircase becomes not just a functional element, but a work of art in itself. Positioned at the front of the house, the staircase seamlessly integrates with the space, offering a smooth transition to the private areas above.

Eco-conscious Vastu Design
Designed in alignment with the principles of Vastu —an ancient Indian science of architecture, the layout promotes the flow of positive energy throughout the home. Large windows and lush gardens enable cross ventilation and ample natural light, making each room feel airy, open and connected to the natural world.
From the raw beauty of the textured Kota stone to the locally sourced furniture for the kitchen and wardrobe, the house is built with sustainability in mind. Even the leftover materials on site were reclaimed, such as in the form of a miniature car display that adorns the child’s bedroom.
Quaint, Simple Living
Amidst the buzz of city life, Snail House offers a soothing, cozy nook for the family to pause, breathe, and unwind. Minimal yet meaningful, it captures the essence of a village house in an urban setting—an idyllic retreat for the soul and the senses. Here, in the embrace of nature, music and simplicity, the family finds warmth, togetherness and comfort.
