Set within a dense urban site in Vijayawada, House of Voids by Studio Urban Form + Objects is a bold reinterpretation of urban Indian dwelling. This 800 sqm multigenerational house is designed as an introspective volume: a response to its site with limited frontage, tighter setbacks on three sides, and the prescriptive demands of Vaastu principles.

Its design is shaped by a strategy of subtraction, where a series of open-to-sky voids, staggered across the levels, are carved into the built mass right at its centre. In doing so, the house becomes an architectural statement that is defined not by what is constructed, but by what is unbuilt.

Its design forgoes the typical approach of stacking rooms and maximizing built area; instead, the layout is structured around the voids. These open-to-sky clearings, placed one above the other across three levels and guided by Vastu principles, act as both spatial and climatic devices, drawing in daylight, channeling airflow, and establishing a visual and functional dialogue between different levels.

The voids also form the emotional and communal heart of the home, where the family’s everyday life unfolds. Their width-to-height ratio enables them to remain functional throughout the day. Pickles are laid out to dry in the sun, children play across these volumes, and family members sit out for some gentle breeze in the evening.

The porousness of the inner volumes also welcomes the outside world in unexpected ways. “The house has occasional visits by curious monkeys navigating between the walls,” recalls Prachi Parekh and Vineet Vora, co-founders of Studio Urban Form + Objects. “Sometimes they pause to peer in before moving along, as if inspecting the architecture themselves.” These fleeting encounters highlight how the House of Voids engages with the neighbourhood beyond its thresholds.

Unlike conventional urban residences that retreat behind high compound walls, House of Voids engages with its immediate urban context in a distinctive way. It forgoes a compound wall, instead opening onto the street through a narrow entrance at the ground level. The façade itself bends inward, subtly negotiating the transition between public and private realms. This recessed entry allows for movement along the public edge while maintaining a sense of controlled permeability. Similarly, the base of the building directs rainwater into concealed stormwater channels, thereby creating a discreet, functional plinth that respects both climatic performance and street-level experience.

The building’s sculptural character is further articulated through its material palette and detailing. In stark contrast to the surrounding built environment, the house refrains from vibrant colors and ornamentation, instead opting for a restrained material palette of leather finished in dark grey granite. The use of dark tone instead of black is in accordance with Vaastu beliefs that restrict the use of pitch dark materials. This conscious aesthetic decision underscores the house’s philosophy: a deep engagement with traditions while embracing a modern, minimalistic interpretation.

This philosophy also extends to how the materials are assembled. For example, the façade is constructed using a dry cladding system specially designed with a custom fabricated bracketing allowing it to project 600 mm out of the rigid building line as specified by Vaastu Shashtra. In keeping with the same principles, it is allowed to undulate, chamfer and project as required, generating depth, shadow, and weather protection for openings.

These projections serve as a thermal buffer, reducing heat gain inside the building. The use of vertical wooden fins, introduces a tactile contrast against the dark granite façade. These fins not only enhance privacy but also soften the overall composition, allowing for a rhythmic interaction of light and shadow. As sunlight shifts through the day, the façade transforms in tone and reflectivity, lending a quiet dynamism to the house’s appearance.

In House of Voids, the material and spatial strategies coalesce into a built form that is both responsive and poetic. It is a mediation on architectural dichotomies: solid and void, private and communal, tradition and modernity. Despite its tight plot and urban constraints, the house creates a deeply internal world, shaped by voids.

Rising amid its dense urban fabric like a sculptural monolith, the House of Voids challenges what domestic architecture can look like in Indian cities. In doing so, it demonstrates that Vastu-compliant design need not be reductive—that prescription can coexist with inventiveness and architectural expression. And most significantly, it offers a blueprint for how age-old principles can be reimagined to craft a home that is both culturally resonant and architecturally avant-garde.
