Commissioned by the Bornego College of Heerenveen, we designed a cost-effective and sustainable school of 4500m2 with multi-use areas and a sports hall. The new building is located next to the existing Bornego College and will be used mostly by students in their first year. An independent functioning and well-organized building.
Hill:
By placing the school on a small hill of less than 1,5 meter, it is possible to place the gym partly inside the hill, without affecting the heights of the upper floors. The floor of the gym connects directly to the adjacent sports fields, which will encourage the outdoor activities.
The small hill also provides a building with a clear, powerful and monumental character. Around this green hill a variety of meeting places exist.
Sustainability
How do you create a sustainable and energy efficient school? We started with a compact building to increase the efficient surfaces and reducing the lengths of the facades. All the classrooms are arranged around an atrium of three storeys. Inside this atrium we created a spectacular staircase connecting all the floors and the multi-use areas.
This atrium is also used to automaticaly dissipate the heat from the classrooms, which drastically reduces on the installation ducts and costs.
The masonry in the facade is composed of recycled bricks. These bricks vary in color and form. To create unity in the facade we partly plastered them with light grey cement.
The gold aluminum frames reflect the daylight and create a beautiful contrast with the massive facade.
The structure consists entirely of prefabricated concrete. This reduced the construction period and the labour costs and made it possible to works very accurately.
Interior:
The interior is warm and has plenty of light. The dynamic shapes and objects in the interior form a pleasant contrast to the monumental and sober character of the exterior.
The project was realised for €960/m2.
