Restaurant Marea Alta in Barcelona
“Thonet All Seasons” Chairs S 34 N, S 35 N and S 64 N
Location: Marea Alta Restaurant, Edifici Colón, Ciutat Vella, Avinguda de les Drassanes
Just a few metres from Barcelona’s old harbour and the famous La Rambla promenade, the high-rise Edificio Colón was built on the Avinguda de les Drassanes in 1970. With 28 floors and a height of 110 metres, it was Barcelona’s first building to exceed the 100-metre mark.
Today, a unique restaurant and bar is located on floors 23 to 24: the Spanish star chef Enrique Valentí opened the “Marea Alta” in September 2016 and has since been offering a menu featuring extraordinary seafood dishes with French and Japanese influences.
Thanks to the hexagonal shape of the space and the floor-to-ceiling windows, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of Barcelona. The restaurant’s interior design is characterised by maritime touches: wooden floorboards, porthole-shaped mirrors and a largely white and marine blue scheme are reminiscent of the interior of a ship.
Thonet supplied 16 classic cantilevered tubular steel S 64 N chairs with chrome-plated frames, plus various models from the “Thonet All Seasons” collection, which gives new all-weather finishes to a range of further Bauhaus era icons. The outdoor furniture harmonises beautifully with the interior, proving it can make an equally striking impression indoors.
A total of 83 S 34 N chairs (origially desiged by Mart Stam) were specified in all white, some with the addition of night-blue cushions. Three S 35 N lounge chairs, (originally designed by Marcel Breuer) including footstools, invite visitors to enjoy the stunning views of the Mediterranean in comfort.

Thonet – future-oriented furniture design with a long tradition
The unique success story of Thonet began with the work of master carpenter Michael Thonet. Since establishing his first workshop in Boppard on the River Rhine in 1819, the name Thonet has stood for high-quality, innovative and elegant furniture. The breakthrough came with the iconic chair No. 14, the so-called Vienna Coffee House Chair: the pioneering technique of bending solid beech wood for the first time enabled the mass production of chairs.
The second milestone in design history was the tubular steel furniture by the famous Bauhaus architects Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer in the 1930s. At the time, Thonet was the world’s largest producer of these tubular steel furniture designs, which are considered timeless today.
For the company today, the continuous process of innovation stands in the foreground alongside a focus on tradition and fine craftsmanship. Thonet collaborates with renowned national and international designers – in addition, some of the furniture is designed by the in-house Thonet Design Team.
All of the furniture is produced in the company-owned manufacturing facility, and, following the motto “Individuality is our standard”, custom-tailored solutions are part of everyday life in Frankenberg. Chief Executive Officer Brian Boyd together with Chief Operating Officer Michael Erdelt and Art Director Norbert Ruf manage the company at the corporate head offices and production site in Frankenberg/Eder (Germany). The descendants of Michael Thonet, the fifth and sixth generations, are actively involved with the company’s business as partners and sales representatives.
