Buckley Gray Yeoman to transform leading independent school
Buckley Gray Yeoman (BGY) has been appointed to refurbish four boarding houses at Roedean School, one of the UK’s leading independent girls’ schools. The project will transform Roedean’s accommodation, ensuring the quality of the interior spaces reflects the school’s reputation for excellence.
Founded in 1885, Roedean is located on the outskirts of Brighton overlooking the Channel. The impressive Grade II listed buildings were designed by Sir John Simpson, architect of the original Wembley stadium, and are a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The scheme involves the major reconfiguration and redesign of more than 200 bedrooms and communal spaces, providing areas for interactive learning and private study, as well as socialising. The design will ensure the optimum use of the available space, creating communal breakout areas which will be hubs of activity within the school.
The modernisation of the boarding houses will remain sensitive to the school’s rich heritage and preserve the impressive original detailing of the buildings, such as the fireplaces and staircases. This process of sympathetic refurbishment will be underpinned by extensive research into the school’s history, alongside thorough consultation with students and staff.
Paul White, Director of Buckley Gray Yeoman, said:
“We are delighted to have been selected for this prestigious project, which draws upon our experience in educational design as well as our work in the residential and hotel sectors.
“Whether it’s a residential space or a common room, the challenge is to find the right balance between creating welcoming, homely spaces that are also appropriate for work and socialising. The additional challenge at Roedean will be breathing new life into these spaces whilst preserving the distinct personality and character of the school.”
Richard Poffley, Director of Finance and Administration at Roedean, said:
“This is a particularly exciting time in Roedean’s 125-year history, ensuring all the buildings on our 45 acre site match the first class education on offer.”
“In what was a very tight tender process, we were impressed with the speed in which Buckley Gray Yeoman grasped our vision for the boarding accommodation. Its proposed design solutions show a real understanding of the values of our community and the houses’ importance for both day and boarding students. The new accommodation will be central to our new flexi and weekly boarding programme.”
