Make Architects wins Brighton Centre redevelopment
Global property developer Standard Life Investments and Brighton & Hove City Council are expected to confirm Make architectural team as lead consultant of the coveted design competition for the development of the Brighton Conference Centre site on 27 July.
Council leader Mary Mears said: “Make Architects has demonstrated in their approach that they will be able to deliver a world class development to live up to the council’s and Standard Life Investments’ aspirational vision for this highly sensitive and important site.
“Delivery of a new convention centre has been a key economic priority for the city. It shows the major developers regard Brighton & Hove as a great place to invest.”
Danny McHugh, Investment Director at Standard Life Investments, added: “We are delighted to make the first appointment of what will be a world class team of consultants to work with us in the creation of this unique development of exceptional quality that will transform this area of Brighton.”
Ken Shuttleworth, founder of Make, said: “It’s a real privilege to be appointed to design this development and as a team we are really looking forward to working together in realising a striking, innovative and highly sustainable building for Brighton. The city has such a distinct character and our design must be rooted in this context; uniquely Brightonian.”
The new, seafront convention centre forms a key part of Standard Life Investments’ major regeneration scheme; alongside the new venue, the developer will deliver an extended and improved Churchill Square shopping mall and hotel.
The appointment of the Make design team confirms the first in a group of eight professional practices. It is anticipated that the full team will be assembled by late August. Although the timescale is not yet confirmed, a six month phase of feasibility studies is expected to take place once the full team has been selected.
In the meantime, the council says it is business as usual at the Brighton Centre, which continues to take bookings for major conferences, events and shows for the foreseeable future.
