New Design Competition by arch out loud
Despite how chaotic our lives are, we cherish the consistency of sleeping in the same bed and performing the same daily rituals here. Yet, new trends in digitalization and globalization continue to reshape realms of everyday life and alter our physical environments, including our homes. It is important to examine how we adapt our living spaces to these shifts.

arch out loud NUCLEAR international open ideas competition
NUCLEAR international open ideas competition
INTRODUCTION
Since the Cold War, one of the most challenging and urgent tasks facing governments around the world has been the disposal of transuranic nuclear waste. As a by-product from nuclear weaponry production, transuranic waste is not only harmful, but also boasts a formidable decay process lasting thousands of years.
To address this issue, millions of barrels of highly radioactive waste have been buried in repositories deep beneath the earth’s surface. One such disposal site is the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico, United States. To ensure public safety, it is imperative that the site remain undisturbed for the duration of the waste’s decay process.
arch out loud asks competition entrants to design a marker or marker system to deter inadvertent human intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. The marker should exist as a means of passive institutional control of the site for the duration of 10,000 years, following the closure and deactivation of the WIPP. The purpose of the marker is to communicate with future generations that transuranic waste is buried within a repository at the facility, located 2,150 feet beneath its surface, and should remain isolated until the risks posed by its release have been sufficiently diminished.

Tenancingo Square Mediascape international open-ideas competition
arch out loud has released the winners of its’ HUMAN TRAFFICKING: Tenancingo Square Mediascape international open-ideas competition.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: TENANCINGO SQUARE MEDIASCAPE – RESULTS SUMMARY
arch out loud called on designers to examine the role architecture plays in combatting
the global epidemic of human trafficking.
Architectural research initiative arch out loud has released the winners of its’ Tenancingo
Square Mediascape international open-ideas competition.
arch out loud challenged participants to reimagine the town square of Tenancingo, Mexico in
response to the prevalent issues of sex trafficking existing in the area. Designers explored the
catalytic potentials of architectural intervention, inciting positive change through the
introduction of a transformative mediascape. “Mediascape” is a program that arch out loud
suggests being the combination of a public landscape and connective media technologies, two
important components in the modern square.
Proposals from the competition raised the question: How might a modified square reshape
communal mindset and motivation, reconstituting the image of a town where exploitation has
become normalized? The proposed conversions aimed to both educate and empower,
reforming entrenched behavior. With proposals from both regional designers and designers
from other parts of the world, the competition brought forth a large variety of approaches to
an extremely sensitive, but immediate, societal problem. The various mediascapes reveal how
architecture plays one of the most important background roles to the shaping of society and
culture.
Being the first architectural competition to address human and sex trafficking, arch out loud
hopes that the culmination of this exploration is only the beginning of the field’s examination of
its’ role in the matter. arch out loud invites designers and organizations from all over the world
to continue engaging the topic. If you have ideas, suggestions, or partnership proposals please
connect by emailing info@archoutloud.com.

arch out loud competition: BORDERS – The Korean DMZ Bathhouse Competition Winners
BORDERS – The Korean DMZ Bathhouse Competition by arch out loud competition
RESULTS SUMMARY
Architectural research initiative arch out loud has released the winners of its’ DMZ Underground Bathhouse international open-ideas competition.
BORDERS – The Korean DMZ Bathhouse Competitio
arch out loud challenged designers to explore the possibility of creating an underground bath
house within the Korean Demilitarized Zone which responded to the surrounding geopolitical
conditions. New forms of non-military architecture could occupy the border zone and begin to
ease the existing tension.
The role tourism can play in opening relations across a border begs the question: How does architecture position itself in the middle of this condition of tension?
With nearly 300 proposals and over 900 participants from all over the world, the designers of
the DMZ Underground Bathhouse competition confronted the very sensitive zone with a variety
of poetic and sublime approaches. Program and narrative were common components in
proposals for releasing tension through the bathhouse.

Is the home a place for both work and play? A place for entertainment? A destination for travel? A place for family, friends and beyond to gather? Does a home shield you from the elements or bring you closer to them? Who does the home serve? A single individual or large family? Who does it serve today and in the future?
