BACCO Arquitetos is the office that signs the project of the New International Airport of Belo Horizonte, inaugurated last year.
The office signs the renovation of the existing passenger terminal and the architectural design of the new Terminal, which proposed the installation of several commercial areas in the departure lounge, a concept already used in other airports in the world.
The existing Terminal project, designed by the architect Milton Ramos, is a legacy for Brazilian architecture. In this sense, the proposal of the work developed tried to preserve it to the maximum and to adapt it to the new necessities of the airport.
At Terminal 1, the great challenge was to follow the quality of the project. It would be impossible to conceive, in the present context, a ramp or a staircase such as those existing in the building inaugurated in 1984, of an undisputed beauty and quality of execution.
The glass cover has been reconfigured to ensure better thermal comfort for passengers. Bacco sought to rescue some of Milton Ramos’ original concepts, freeing up space on the old street, which had been transformed into flowerbeds blocking the passage, and which today, although covered, has once again become a street.
The challenge of the new Terminal project was to deal with the size of the new pier, which incorporated more than 600 meters to the existing terminal. The two terminals are integrated and the route reaches more than one kilometer in a single hall.
The wide right foot that will allow, in the future, the installation of new commercial areas, privileged the incidence of natural light create a differentiation in the projected space, both by opening the windows at the top and in the musical rhythm of brises that protect from the sun. The blocks where the toilets and the various technical installations are located draw the rhythm of the façade on the land side. Three sets of treadmills help minimize travel time within the terminal.
The idea that guided the implementation of the new terminal was the exploration of the existing aircraft yard, including a diagonal that will ensure the circulation of the aircraft and allow the possible expansions of commercial exploration areas and the implementation of new terminals on the land side. In addition, this solution minimized interferences in the road system during construction.
