First prize in the Architecture category was given to thenew Catering College housed within the compound of a former abattoir (in Medina Sidonia, Cadiz) by Sol 89 architects (María González García and Juanjo López de la Cruz).
Sol 89 “sheltered” the new building under a series of dynamic, angular roofs, sympathetically clad in 13×13 cm ceramic tiles. Also,12×25 cm ceramics by Exagres were used extensively for the floors and walls of the school kitchen facilities. The judges were unanimous that “this project displayed a strong awareness of the current context, resulting in a resource-economic design which demonstrated an outstanding sense of tact and appropriateness”.
Teacher Training College, Granada:

First prize in the Interior Design category went to the ‘Teacher Training College’ by Ramón Fernández-Alonso Borrajo in Granada in the Southeast of Spain.
The judges stressed the “original feature of bringing ceramic tiles from the exterior into the interior of the building.” The project makes powerful use of bespoke advanced ceramics by Spanish company Decorativa (a renowned leader in architectural tiles) which have been applied to the magnificent ventilated façade of the building and then elegantly continued as a motif to the interior ceilings.
Remodelling of Plaza Mayor and Projection over the Duero, Almazan:

Special mention for Architecture was awarded to a project entitled ‘Remodelling of Plaza Mayor and Projection over the Duero’ in Almazan by Churtichaga+Quadra-Salcedo Arquitectos. The Plaza Mayor, surrounded by monumental buildings in the centre of this historic Spanish town, was covered with high traffic and frost resistant 30x8x6cm extruded ceramics with terracotta effects, specially developed by Decorativa. The judges highlighted “the bold, sweeping gesture of emptying a square and the use of the material in earth tones to create an atmosphere of serenity”.
Final Year Project Category
Finally, the Tile of Spain Awards also include a category for the Best Final Year Project by undergraduates at Architecture Schools, in which the use of ceramic tiles plays a predominant role. Particularly worthy of mention is the fact that this year, two of the four projects that received special mentions were the work of students from schools outside Spain.
First prize was awarded to “A meeting of fabrics – l’unité flottante, inhabiting the Alexander” by Mª Dolores Parrilla Ayuso from the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM).
Recognising the high quality of entries, the judges also awarded four special mentions to the following projects:
– “The Lost Tanka Archipelago” by Michelle Lam, a Master of Architecture student at University College London.
– “Cemetery – Island in Fleves, Greece” by Ángela Juarranz Serrano from the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM)
– “New value” by Benjamin Reynolds from Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
– “Revitalising Lisbon’s former cinema-theatres” by Ana González Pérez from the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM).
More than a decade of Tile of Spain Awards
The success of the Tile of Spain Awards, now in their eleventh year, has earned this event an excellent reputation within the international architecture community, both for the prestige of the judging panels and the standard of the winning projects.
