Regional Jury Chair, Benedict Zucchi of BDP said of this year’s Award winners:
“This year’s eleven strong shortlist showcased a broad range of project types: from a variety of small to medium scale residential schemes through to retail and office interventions in existing buildings and at the larger end of the spectrum, four learning buildings catering for very different uses. Locations also varied from inner city regeneration sites to remote and ecologically sensitive rural settings. These provided a strong field not only in terms of regional awards but also the specialist
categories for sustainability and conservation.
The seven regional winners stood out because of the close partnerships they fostered between architect and client teams and the way difficult challenges posed by their sites and briefs were turned into inventive solutions that project a strong sense of place.”
Further Special Awards were awarded to:
• Hope View House by Warren Benbow Architects, Sustainability Award sponsored by Geberit
• The Old Court House by Harrison Brookes Architects, Conservation Award
• University of Birmingham Indoor Sports Centre by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, Client of the Year, Sponsored by Tobermore
• Rhys Harrison of Harrison Brookes Architects for The Old Court House, Project Architect of the Year sponsored by Taylor Maxwell
• Royal Birmingham Conservatoire by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios LLP, Building of the Year sponsored by Artifice
RIBA West Midland Award winners will also be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced on Thursday 21 June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings later in the year.
