2022 RIBA West Midlands Building of the Year announced
RIBA West Midlands Awards Winner
The Undercroft learning Centre, Worcester Cathedral, Worcester by Acanthus Clews Architects has been announced as the 2022 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) West Midlands Building of the Year.
Acanthus Clews have managed to breathe life into the damp vaults of Worcester Cathedral, causing a stir to passers-by who frequently peer through the crafted windows. The conversion of the former monastic storage rooms into the new Undercroft Learning Centre, truly provides an innovative and versatile venue to learn and discover for the whole community.
RIBA President, Simon Allford said:
“Winning a regional Building of the Year Award is a major achievement. Across the country projects have been selected for this accolade because they are exemplars of the very best of innovative, intelligent and delightful design. The results of positive collaboration between architect and client, and design team and contractor, they demonstrate that high quality, sustainable architecture can positively impact the lives of the people that engage with it.
My warmest congratulations to all those involved.”
The RIBA Regional Building of the Year Awards were presented at a ceremony at the RIBA’s Headquarters in London on Tuesday evening.
The Undercroft Learning Centre is one of 5 projects which received a 2022 RIBA West Midlands Award, announced earlier this month.
All RIBA West Midlands Award winners will now be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced in June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.

Honey and Walnut House
Design: Intervention Architecture Ltd
In cleverly minimising new extensions and instead placing focus on opening the primary structure, Intervention Architecture has transformed this humble bungalow. Set within a row of traditional 70’s bungalows, the new form is subtly striking and rebalances the proportions to reveal a secret vault of space internally.
Mill Lodge, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire
Design: Michael Kendrick Architects
Mill Lodge Leamington Spa, Warwickshire design by Michael Kendrick Architects makes excellent use of a constrained and slender site within a Conservation Area. This new residential building is a contemporary, one-bedroom home for an elderly couple.
One Chamberlain Square, Birmingham
Design: Eric Parry Architects
One Chamberlain Square, the first building within the Paradise Masterplan, provides a footprint for high quality workplaces for the future. While the building respects the principles of the overarching masterplan with its focus on creating a sustainable new destination for the city, it has truly embraced the opportunity offered by this unique and sensitive location.
The Undercroft Learning Centre, Worcester Cathedral, Worcester
Design: Acanthus Clews Architects
Through an exercise in exquisite detailing and light-touch intervention, Acanthus Clews have managed to breathe life into the damp vaults of Worcester Cathedral, causing a stir to passers-by who frequently peer through the crafted windows. The conversion of the former monastic storage rooms into the new Undercroft Learning Centre, truly provides an innovative and versatile venue to learn and discover for the whole community.
Winter House, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire
Design: Scott Donald Architecture
Uniquely for Winter House there was no design brief in terms of style or area, and instead, the client issued the Architect his impressive art schedule. While it’s apparent that Art is the central focus of the plan, through a meticulous attention to detail, uninhabited connection between inside and out – what has been delivered is a beautifully crafted home.
