This biennial awards programme continues to grow in stature, not only demonstrating exemplary and innovative uses of copper in contemporary design, but also exposing to a wide international audience the very best in European architectural projects, some of which might otherwise go unrecognised.

The Cantos Music Foundation announce that Allied Works Architecture has been selected to design Cantos’ new National Music Centre at the King Eddy site in Calgary’s East Village. After an extensive worldwide search and impressive public presentations from five international architects, this highly anticipated announcement is a milestone event in the creation of Canada’s only National Music Centre.

Liege-Guillemins TGV Railway Station, Belgium
Calatrava conceived the station as a link between two distinct areas of the city of Liège, which previously had been separated by the railroad tracks. On the north side of the site is a rundown urban area, laid out in a typical 19th century scheme.

The 33,400 m2 new school, designed by the Danish architects schmidt hammer lassen, is the largest new school in Norway. Schmidt hammer lassen won the international competition for the school including a 4000 spectator sports arena in 2005. One year later, the company won the competition for a 25,000 m2 school building of City of Westminster College.

VISUAL Carlow, Ireland

Terry Pawson Architects’ VISUAL & the George Bernard Shaw Theatre provides Ireland with a significant new arts space to showcase contemporary visual arts and theatre of national and international importance. Unique to Ireland, the new building features an expansive gallery space with a ceiling height of 12m to accommodate large-scale sculpture and installation, the scale of which has not been easily accommodated in Ireland to date.
Kunsthaus Zürich Extension, Switzerland

David Chipperfield Architects’ design for the Kunsthaus Zürich extension, won in competition in December 2008, has been developed in line with the jury’s recommendations regarding its function within the urban context and its internal organisation. The revised scheme comprises a managed reduction of the building’s volume, a more precise position on Heimplatz, greater openness to the extension’s surroundings on all four sides and an upgrading of the art garden.
