With a post-and-beam structure and expansive windows overlooking a Japanese garden and private forest, the Parkland House has served as a creative homebase for the film industry couple behind Hollywood blockbusters like X-Men and Tron.
VANCOUVER, February, 2024 – West Coast Modern is announcing today that it is listing the Bob Lewis-designed Parkland House for sale in North Vancouver. Inspired by Joseph Eichler’s take on California modernism, the 1956-built home features floor-to-ceiling windows that draw the eye to the parklike surroundings and the city views beyond. Conducive to creativity, it was looking out the living room window that current owners, both film industry professionals, came up with the creative vision for Hollywood blockbusters like X-Men and Tron.
“The rich legacy of modernist homes that we enjoy on the west coast is largely due to Joseph Eichler and Bob Lewis,” says Trent Rodney, Co-Founder at West Coast Modern. “Together, the two men were the driving force beyond the expansion of modernist residential architecture in California and British Columbia, respectively.”
Located at 3219 Regent Avenue in North Vancouver’s Upper Lonsdale neighbourhood, the Parkland House features four bedrooms and two bathrooms spread over 3,186 square feet. Exposed cedar beams and expansive windows connect the space to the mature Japanese garden (original to the home) and the private forest that cover the rest of the 12,326-square-foot corner lot.
A stay at the Sidney Bazett House – a Usonian-style home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright – inspired Joseph Eichler, a businessman, to become a real estate developer of modernist homes. Between 1949 and 1966, Eichler built more than 11,000 modernist homes throughout California. His homes are known for “bringing the outside in” through their signature use of features like skylights, glass walls, clerestory windows and atriums.
Bob Lewis brought Eichler’s brand of innovative, highly livable designs up north and quickly became the most prolific builder of modernist homes in B.C. In total, he designed and built – through his company Lewis Construction – 745 homes throughout the province. Far surpassing his higher-profile contemporaries Arthur Erickson (who built 12 homes) and Fred Hollingsworth (who built 17).
“In California, Eichler-designed homes are highly sought after, and the rare few that come on the market are quickly snapped up,” continues Rodney. “Buyers of Bob Lewis homes in B.C. can benefit from a market that is not yet quite as intense, but that will likely see the same boom in interest that Eichler homes in California have experienced over the past 15 years.”
The Parkland House was listed on the District of North Vancouver Heritage Register as the Pool Residence and originally built for Don Pool, a prominent judge, whose family lived in the home until 2001.
The Parkland House is being offered at $2,850,000. The home will be open for public tours beginning February 25, 2024. Prospective buyers are invited to visit westcoastmodern.ca/tours to reserve their spot.
