West Coast Modern Lists Arthur Erickson’s Montiverdi House #8 for Sale in West Vancouver
West Coast Modern is announcing today that it is listing Arthur Erickson’s Montiverdi House #8 for sale. Located in the Caulfield neighbourhood of West Vancouver, the 2,010-square-foot home is the first ground-oriented home in Montiverdi Estates to come on the market in over a decade.
“This is a rare opportunity to buy into Montiverdi Estates – Arthur Erickson and Cornelia Oberlander’s coveted follow-up to their iconic collaboration at Robson Square and the Law Courts,” says Trent Rodney, Co-Founder at West Coast Modern. “Over the years, the neighbourhood has attracted a community of architecture enthusiasts and creatives who are dedicated to preserving and restoring these unique homes as part of B.C.’s architectural record.”
Montiverdi Estates was designed by Arthur Erickson as a “residential park” with each of the 20 homes being carefully integrated into the natural setting. Modelled after his famous Smith House, the homes in Montiverdi Estates all feature green roofs, similar to the one that Erickson designed for the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.
The neighbourhood’s landscape architecture was overseen by the late Cornelia Oberlander. To maintain the park-like quality, no formal property lines were defined and a large wildflower meadow in the centre of the neighbourhood was preserved as a community space for residents.
Unlike most homes in Montiverdi Estates, which are perched atop timber stilts on the mountainside, Montiverdi #8 is situated on a level parcel that provides access to the outdoors from all major living areas. The 8,210-square-foot lot features a sizeable yard designed to accommodate a swimming pool.
Often lauded as Canada’s greatest architect, Vancouver-born Arthur Erickson designed a series of high-profile buildings over the course of his career both in Canada and abroad, including Simon Fraser University, Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto and the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C.
One of the first women to be awarded a degree in landscape architecture from Harvard, CorneliaHahn Oberlander produced landscape designs for the Vancouver Public Library, the National Gallery of Canada and the New York Times Building atrium, among many other notable projects. She is also credited with coming up with the idea for natural log seating on Vancouver beaches.
Prospective buyers are invited to contact West Coast Modern to arrange a tour.
