The Globe and Mail Centre Building
For the second year in a row, a building designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects has won the Office Development of the Year Award for the Greater Toronto Area. The Commercial Real Estate Development Association Greater Toronto Chapter (NAIOP) presented The Globe and Mail Centre, its architects and developers First Gulf Corporation and OPTrust and Colliers International with the REX Award for 2018.
The 500,000-square-foot office tower is the largest office development east of the downtown core and anchors the emerging St. Lawrence neighbourhood hub of urban activity and corporate offices.
The building design features dramatically shifting floor plates that create a rhythmic sequence of cantilevered viewing terraces on all sides. This innovative design feature for an office building provides the structure with a distinctive and contemporary profile. Ten-foot-high windows maximize views and are calibrated to provide crisp expression to the building’s innovative form. A high-performance building envelope and advanced glazing system supplies the energy-efficient LEED Gold candidate tower with daylighting deep into the core.
“The Globe and Mail Centre exemplifies architectural quality and urban design excellence and it is an honour to be recognized for the second year in a row for best new office development in Toronto, which is a dynamic and competitive marketplace,” said David Dow, Principal, Diamond Schmitt Architects.

The office tower connects King St. and Front St. at Berkeley St. with a public arcade, creating a new 24-hour, fully accessible pedestrian mid-block connection for the surrounding community. It is activated on all three street frontages with ample setbacks that provide shelter and increased width to the city sidewalks. Retail services facing the streets and within the arcade ensure additional activity for the area outside of traditional business hours. Display cases in the arcade feature archeological findings from excavating the site, which is located in the historic Town of York.
The namesake tenant, The Globe and Mail, occupies the upper floors of the building, which includes a state-of-the-art event space on the top floor that captures exceptional views of the Toronto waterfront and city skyline.
Diamond Schmitt Architects won the REX Award in 2017 for the KPMG Tower at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.
