Metropolitan Village – Taipei Xinyi-Wenchang Residence Design
The Metropolitan Village, a new high rise residential tower designed by OMA’s David Gianotten and Chiaju Lin, has topped out in Taipei’s Xinyi central business district. The 23-storey building introduces a vertical village concept shaped by the increasingly fluid boundary between living and working in post pandemic Taipei, as well the city’s diverse urban conditions.
The tower consists of interlocking volumes arranged around a central services core, each distinguished by its own façade. This composition creates more than 30 unit types – from 68 sqm studios suited to singles working primarily from home to 165 sqm family apartments with generous kitchens. The majority of units measure 120 sqm and can be flexibly adapted for living, working, or leisure.
Shared facilities are distributed throughout the building, including a business center and meeting room on the ground floor, and a library, bar, and restaurants positioned at heights aligned with the rooftops of adjacent buildings. A gym and communal terraces on the roof offer expansive views across the city. Together, these spaces form an elevated social landscape that supports community and work life balance.
The aggregation of volumes responds to the contrasting urban scales of the site: the large scale Xinyi district at the front and the finer grained Wenchang neighborhood behind. To enhance connectivity, the lower volumes are lifted to create a new pedestrian passage linking both areas.
The façade combines glass and coated aluminum panels, with patterned glass – commonly used in older Taiwanese interiors – applied as balustrades in areas requiring less privacy, creating a mosaic like expression of domestic activity.
Commissioned by Continental Development Corporation, the project broke ground in 2024 and is scheduled for completion in 2027. HCCH & Associates Architects Planners & Engineers is the local collaborator.
