Kaohsiung Exhibition and Convention Centre
Design: COX Architecture
COX Architecture are the design architects for the turnkey team that won the bid to deliver the Kaohsiung Exhibition and Convention Centre in Taiwan.
In Australia, Cox Architecture has designed the Sydney Exhibition Centre, Canberra National Convention Centre, and more recently the Perth and Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centres. Internationally they have designed Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Singapore Expo, and the Durban International Conference Centre and Arena in South Africa. COX Architecture’s level of experience was a key factor in their successful bid.
The winning design concept reflects Kaohsiung strong relationship with the sea being Taiwans’ largest harbour city and is currently undergoing major urban transformation.
Founding Director, Philip Cox, said, “The design is a flamboyant wave-like structure befitting the new maritime precinct of Kaohsiung.”
“As a low scale building, looked down upon by high rise CBD buildings, the intricacies of the triangulated roof structure contain solar collectors and glazing giving the building intrigue, much like a giant sculpture sitting along the waterfront within a park setting.”
Critical to the design is the introduction of a public street that links the city urban fabric to the developing waterfront. The building is reflective of the new hybrid centre that truly combines exhibition and convention in a single integrated public facility.
The exhibition component of the scheme has 1100 indoor ground floor stands and 400 outdoor stands while the first floor convention component accommodates 2000 delegates.
Operating in association with Ricky Liu Architects and Associates and working with Lee Ming Construction in Taiwan the COX Architecture project is due for completion in mid 2012.
The Kaohsiung Government expects the Centre to increase annual revenue by A$1m and provide employment opportunities for about 2,000
Established in 1964, COX is one of Australia’s most awarded architecture practices well known for its many iconic projects. It is an integrated company providing services in planning, urban design, architecture and interior design to clients both nationally and internationally.

Lè Architecture in Taipei
Designed by Global Design Principal Dr Andy Wen, Lè Architecture in the Nangang district of Taipei redefines Taipei’s rapidly developing skyline. Its design drew inspiration from the shape of the river pebbles along the Keelung River, developing a unique aesthetic concept that conveys the idea of roundness and elegance, as well as strength and character.

Life in the city is something that everyone tries to escape. It is full of cars, noises and things that assault our senses. Most people born in a city or who have lived there for a long time quickly grow tired of the hustle and bustle.
