Tadao Ando Architect & Associates is one of Japan’s most influential architectural practices, based in Osaka. Founded in 1969 by Tadao Ando, the studio has gained international recognition for its refined minimalist architecture, masterful use of exposed concrete, and sensitive integration of natural light, water and landscape.
Born in Osaka in 1941, Tadao Ando is a self-taught architect who did not receive formal architectural training. Before establishing his practice, he pursued a career as a professional boxer and travelled extensively throughout Europe, North America and Asia, studying historic and modern architecture firsthand. These experiences profoundly shaped his distinctive architectural philosophy.
Since opening his practice in Osaka in 1969, Ando has designed museums, cultural institutions, churches, private residences and commercial buildings across the world. His work is characterised by geometric simplicity, carefully choreographed movement, and the creation of contemplative spaces where architecture, nature and light are brought into close dialogue.
Among his many honours, Tadao Ando received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Royal Gold Medal in 1997, and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Gold Medal in 2002, recognising his outstanding contribution to world architecture.
