The Atrium Breathes New Life Into North Sydney’s Casual Dining
24th of February 2017 – North Sydney’s casual dining market is set to receive a shake-up thanks to an edgy design by Australasian architectural firm The Buchan Group.
The Atrium at Greenwood Plaza, completed in March 2016, has been revitalised by the award-winning firm, transforming the food court into one of the most modern and exciting casual dining precincts in the area.
The Buchan Group Senior Associate Malou Ellis said the initial design concept was inspired by the stoma cell, incorporating discrete, varied zones to offer relief and contrast from the pace and rigid structure of the North Sydney business district.
“The design approach was driven by the fast-paced demographic of the broad clientele. It was imperative to ensure the space responded to the varied target market,” she said.
“We really wanted to redefine Greenwood as an engaging and inspiring space through integration of a rich interplay of finishes and textures.
“We did this through utilising elements and finishes inspired by the patterns in nature and applying them in an eclectic way. Natural light, and the way nature plays with this light, was a particular inspiration for the design solution.
“Introducing a material palette that reflects the sophistication of the demographic of The Atrium while recognising younger professionals and students as regular patrons was a consideration throughout the design process.
“Through randomising and repeating the patterns playfully, an intriguing, uplifting and unique space was created at Greenwood Plaza.
“Where dark base hues we incorporated at The Atrium, an edgy undertone arose, layered with bursts of bright colours that were thoughtfully applied to define each zone.
“The furnishings we used for the space are diverse and varied and are not defined by one style, enabling each zone to speak for itself.
“We used repetition and layering of the main pattern, herringbone, which gives rhythm to the eclectic nature of this space.
“The herringbone pattern zig zags throughout the space leaving its mark and each colour plunges around a zone, enveloping scattered pieces of furniture which zooms up an edge of a vertical panel, and wraps around a column.”
