The end is in sight for the development of New South Wales’ largest regional shopping centres, with the final stage of construction underway at Stockland Shellharbour.
Acclaimed Australasian design firm The Buchan Group were appointed by Stockland in 2005 to manage the architectural design from the master planning concept through to construction, including the graphics and signage components.
The $200million project involves a 35,000sqm addition to the existing 33,000sqm retail centre, with the existing building undergoing a major refurbishment.
Buchan Group Associate Director Anthony Palamara said that upon completion of construction works in 2013, Shellharbour would be one of Stockland’s largest retail assets at 68,000sqm, including 3,300 car parking spaces.
“The Buchan Group won the project through a design competition in 2005, and since then has been assisting Stockland with the design, development approvals process and documentation for the centre,” Mr Palamara said.
“Work on the multi-level car park was completed and handed over to Stockland in November 2011, with the new retail additions opening 10 weeks ahead of schedule on 2 May 2012. The existing centre’s refurbishment is currently under construction and is programmed for completion in mid 2013.
“The Stockland Shellharbour project will be a four-star Greenstar rated development upon completion, in both the design and as-built ratings. Environmentally-sustainable initiatives within the development include a naturally-ventilated car park, rainwater collection for irrigation of landscaping, installation of wind turbines on the rooftop car park deck, and the installation of photovoltaic cells over the existing metal roof zones for power generation.
“The investment in photovoltaic cells for the rooftop is quite significant and is rumoured to be the largest photovoltaic array on a retail centre in Australia.”
Stockland National Design Delivery Manager José Sanchez said that The Buchan Group was delivering on the brief to provide an accessible and modern retail centre that set a new benchmark.
“Having worked previously with the team at The Buchan Group on two of our other major centres, we were confident that they would deliver a high quality, environmentally sustainable product within our required timeframe,” Mr Sanchez said.
“Upon completion, Stockland Shellharbour will be the largest regional shopping centre in New South Wales and will set the standard for future retail developments in Australia.”
