Sydney convention and exhibition precinct redevelopment
Joint venture partners HASSELL + Populous are delivering the architectural design for Sydney’s new integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour as design consultants to the Darling Harbour Live consortium (comprising Lend Lease, Capella Capital, AEG Ogden and Spotless). The consortium has been selected by the New South Wales Government as the preferred developer of the A$1 billion facility.
HASSELL will also design the extensive public realm, pedestrian parkland and plaza environs around these new facilities.
The project involves the transformation of this key Sydney precinct through the design of three major public buildings and the unifying public realm, including:
_A convention facility with capacity for three concurrent events of up to 2,500 delegates
_Exhibition space of 40,000 sqm
_A 5,000 sqm external event deck with spectacular city views
_A plenary hall which can be converted to an entertainment theatre seating 8,000
_A grand ballroom with banqueting space for 2,000
_Upgrade and improvements to the public parklands and open space
The remaking of Darling Harbour is a rare opportunity to design a significant new quarter within the central city. It will extend the urban fabric and reconnect the city and surrounds with more permeable networks of streets and lanes, bringing a new level of public amenity for visitors and citizens alike through extended public parkland that is identifiably ‘Sydney’ in character.
All works are due for completion in 2019.
