Beachside Sanctuary in Mona Vale
Contemporary Low Maintenance NSW Property, Australia – design by Utz-Sanby Architects

Beachside Sanctuary House
Design: Utz-Sanby Architects
Location: New South Wales (NSW), Australia
The Beachside Sanctuary House replaced an old weatherboard cottage dearly loved for 3 generations. The location is absolutely stunning and has direct access to the beach and expansive views of the rocky headland, sand and surf. This project unites the extended family and provides relaxation and refuge.
The brief was for a low maintenance beach house that could be used by multiple families either en-masse or individually. The design seeks to offer a choice of quiet, contemplative spaces in addition to the large open-plan living areas that accommodate large gatherings and communal living.
The site is exposed to all the elements with intensity – wind, sun, salt, sea. There is an 11 meter deep sea wall to retain the site in the event of tidal inundation. Materials were selected carefully to withstand these conditions. The design also needed to allow for strong prevailing sea breezes and to offer respite from the elements when needed.
The house consists of two separate pavilions and a restored Changing Shed all linked by a covered walkway from the front of the site with courtyard gardens in between. There are two generous decks at each end of the living space, one facing East and one facing West. This offers flexibility, shelter and protection from the elements throughout the day and in all seasons and all weather.
