Rainbow for Kivik Art Centre in Sweden
The Kivik Art Center is located in southern Sweden between wide meadows and a view of the sea. It sees itself as an interface between architecture, sculpture and nature. And you can find plenty of all of that locally. Embedded between the rich nature, visitors will find art installations, e.g. by Snohetta, or David Chipperfield and now also by querkraft architekten, Vienna.
A slightly sloping, hidden meadow surrounded by large trees with a view of the sea – this location was chosen for the querkraft’s Rainbow installation.
A slender, shimmering silver construction extends over the slope, grows out of the meadow – rises to then sink back into the green. querkraft’s rainbow is delicate and yet resilient, can be experienced on and below it, silver is shimmering and yet pragmatic in its nature.
Visitors can climb the rainbow, get a sublime view of the surroundings and then slide down again, regaining their connection to earth.
With a span of 15 meters and a width of 2.5 meters, the arch is also a place of shelter. Below there is enough space to protect yourself from rain, wind and sun, or simply to perceive the roof above.
The material – a functional yet poetic decision – conventional roof shells from industrial construction with a thickness of only 1.7 mm. This has been expanded to include a function. They are designing a rainbow for the Kivik Art Center and creating a place of rest, for dreaming, looking far and trying things out.
At the opening ceremony on June 26, 2022 by the Austrian ambassador, Mag. Gudrun Graf, querkraft’s rainbow is officially handed over to the sculpture park. Already a weekend before, on 11./12.06. the performance artist Willi Dorner and the photographer Lisa Rastl tried out querkraft’s sculpture with 20 participants.
In the performance entitled “Bodies over/under the rainbow”, the artists interacted with the installation as human sculptures, becoming part of it, expanding and supplementing it, or creating contrasts. Photographically captured, the scenes of the performance show the diversity and playability of the rainbow and hopefully inspire the visitors to interact with querkraft’s rainbow.
The art installation and the performance were made possible with the kind support of the Austrian Embassy in Stockholm and Peneder Holding, Atzbach.
What was the brief?
the Rainbow is an interactive sculpture designed by the Austrian architects querkraft for the Swedish Kivik Art Sculpture Park.
The material used is as simple as clever – an industrial roof shell overspans 15 metres, 2 metres wide and only 1.7 millimetres thick! it The Rainbow by querkraft invites the visitors to step over and get new perspectives, slide down, hide or something else – just try out!
