Dixons Contractors Teams Up with Architecture Practice Keppie Design to Complete Perth College UHI Project
10th January 2016 – Scotland-based design and architecture firm, Keppie Design worked in partnership with leading construction company, Dixons Contractors, to complete the multi-million pound Academy of Sport and Wellbeing at Perth College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland, in time for the 2016/2017 academic year.
The £7 million Perth College UHI facility not only includes a multi-purpose sports hall with bleacher seating for 400 spectators, spacious gyms, classrooms, dance and fitness studios but also facilities for hairdressing and beauty therapy students and a state-of-the-art climbing centre, the only one of its kind in the Perth and Kinross region.
Keppie Design, in partnership with Dixons Contractors, head-quartered in Northern Ireland, met an aggressive timeline and completed the Perth College UHI design and build project within budget and in just over one year.
The design of the new sports hall includes a double height, 42m x 28m area which can accommodate six badminton courts, three netball courts, three volleyball courts, three five-a-side pitches and full size hockey and futsal pitches. The design vision and eventual layout was the result of close collaboration between Perth College UHI and the design team.
Opening in time for the new academic year, students, staff and the wider community have already begun enjoying the purpose-built academy, which contributes greatly to the culture of health and wellbeing.
With a 40 year heritage, Dixons Contractors’ delivery of this major new development reiterates the company’s national reputation in delivering first-class facilities and projects across the UK, and its reputation for delivering high-quality work through effective partnerships.
Declan McKendry, Managing Director, commented: “The Perth College UHI project was a tremendous development to be part of and our team worked diligently to build a modern facility designed to be fully inclusive and accessible for all. Combining Dixons’ expertise and skills with Keppie Design, resulted in a fantastic partnership which delivered purpose-built facilities and provided a spring board for the college in expanding its curriculum. We have built strong and lasting relationships with both Perth College UHI and Keppie Design to allow us to hopefully work together on future projects.”
Declan McKendry, Dixons & David Ross, Keppie Design:
David Ross, Director of Design at Keppie Design said, “The new development enables training for students and the local community at a national level, from the state-of-the-art climbing centre to the multi-purpose sports hall and beauty facilities. In close partnership with Dixons Contractors, we aimed to deliver a sophisticated contemporary design to encompass the needs of Perth College UHI. We carefully considered how the new facility should be designed to best fit within the existing grounds of the campus, with a focus on also reinforcing Perth College UHI’s role within the wider community.”
Jackie MacKenzie, Vice Principal Finance and Estates, Perth College UHI said, “We have a fantastic new facility that was delivered on time and within budget. Dixons Contractors demonstrated a real commitment to working in partnership with the college, listened to us and were proactive in offering suggestions and professional advice.
The team delivered everything they promised and more. It has hugely contributed to the Perth area, enabling an expansion in our curriculum and providing educational facilities for many, from school groups to Masters and PhD students.”
The University of the Highlands and Islands project was also completed in partnership with sports hall development company, Ball Hall.
Established in 1979 as a family-owned business, Dixons Contractors has a strong reputation for delivering high quality projects across the commercial, public and private sectors in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, including health, education, industrial, sports, leisure, public sector, local authority and residential.
