January 9, 2012 – The Standard is pleased to announce that The Standard, New York is a recipient of the 2012 AIA Institute Honor Award for Architecture. The Institute Honor Awards program recognizes achievements for a broad range of architectural activity to elevate the general quality of architecture practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, and inform the public of the breadth and value of architecture practice.

The Standard, New York | Notes of Interest from The American Institute of Architects

Located in Manhattan’s Hudson riverfront Meatpacking District, the hotel responds to its context through contrast: sculptural piers, whose forms clearly separate the building from the orthogonal street grid, raise the building fifty-seven feet off the street, and allow the horizontally-scaled industrial landscape to pass beneath it and natural light to penetrate to the street.

The 18-story building straddles the High Line, a 75-year-old elevated railroad line recently developed into a new linear, public park. The two slabs of the building are “hinged,” angled to further emphasize the building’s distinction from the city’s grid and its levitation above the neighborhood.

The low-scale environment affords the building unique visibility from all directions, and unobstructed 360° views of the city. The juxtaposition of the building’s two materials – concrete and glass – reflects the character of the city: the gritty quality of the concrete contrasts with the refinement of the glass. The concrete grid provides a delicate frame for the exceedingly transparent water-white glass, the two materials unified in the continuous plane of the curtain wall.

The curtainwall breaks with the traditional architecture of hotels, replacing opacity with transparency, privacy with openness and defining a new paradigm.

New York City, June 15, 2011 – The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY) will confer its annual awards and special citations at its 144th Annual Meeting on June 21, 2011 at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place in Greenwich Village, NYC. By honoring architects, philanthropists, public sector employees and organizations that are committed to improving the community through design excellence, these annual awards reinforce the AIA’s central principle: design matters.

“With over four thousand members going in just as many directions, it’s not often that we can gather our community together to discuss the past year’s accomplishments and upcoming plans,” explained Margaret Castillo, AIA, the president of the AIA New York Chapter. “I look forward to welcoming new leadership to our community, and celebrating those who have led the way to making New York a more equitable, sustainable, and inspired city.”

2011 AIA New York Chapter Design Awards Winners

The winners of the 2011 AIA New York Chapter’s Design Awards have recently been announced. The 38 selected projects and the architecture firms behind them represent exceptional work by AIA New York members and other architects practicing in New York in four categories: interiors, architecture, un-built work and urban design.

Each winning project, granted either an “honor” or “merit” award, was chosen for its exemplary originality. The criteria used by the juries included design quality, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness and technique. Projects had to be completed by architects/designers practicing in New York, or be New York City projects, designed by architects/designers based elsewhere. There were 433 entries to the 2011 AIA New York Chapter Design Awards in four categories, including 184 submissions in the architecture category alone.

2011 AIA New York Chapter Design Awards Winners will be exhibited at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, beginning April 14, 2011 with an opening reception from 6-8pm. The Design Awards Exhibition will remain on view through June 25. New this year, the AIA New York Chapter Design Awards Exhibition will feature a “Project of the Year.” This project, selected from amongst the winners, will be displayed in the Center for Architecture’s Helfand Spotlight gallery from April 14 through early May. The selection, which will remain secret until the opening on April 14, will be chosen by AIANY President Margaret Castillo, AIA, LEED AP, benefitting from advice from a team of distinguished experts.

In addition to the Jury Symposium, 2011 AIA New York Chapter Design Award winning projects will be recognized at the Design Awards Luncheon, April 12 at Cipriani Wall Street. Robert A. Ivy, FAIA, EVP/Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects, will be the keynote speaker. The Design Awards Winners’ programs are scheduled for April 16, 11am-5pm (Design Awards Symposium: Architecture and Interiors), May 17, 6-8pm (Design Awards Panel: Urban Design); and June 2, 6-8pm (Design Awards Panel: Unbuilt Work).

2011 AIANY Design Awards of Merit – Ennead Architects

New York, NY, March 8, 2011 – AIA New York, the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects, has announced the winners of its 2011 Design Awards. This prestigious design awards program, now in its 30th year, recognizes outstanding architectural design by New York City architects and honors exemplary work in New York City done by architects from around the globe.
Three projects designed by Ennead Architects have been recognized with 2011 AIANY Design Awards of Merit:

– Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant
– The Standard, New York
– The Gateway Center, Westchester Community College

Awards will be presented on April 12th at the Annual Design Awards Luncheon being held at Cipriani Wall Street.

Steven Holl Architects Receives Two AIA New York Honor Awards

New York City, March 2, 2010 — Steven Holl Architects has been awarded two 2010 Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter for the Horizontal Skyscraper in Shenzhen, China and the Knut Hamsun Center in Hamarøy, Norway.

Horizontal Skyscraper Shenzhen:

The Horizontal Skyscraper, completed in December 2009, is as long as the Empire State Building is tall. Suspended on eight cores, as far as 50 meters apart, the building’s structure is a combination of cable-stay bridge technology merged with a high-strength concrete frame. The first structure of its type, it has tension cables carrying a record load of 3280 tons.

The building and the landscape integrate several new sustainable aspects: a microclimate is created by cooling ponds fed by a grey water system; the building has a green roof with solar panels; it is a tsunami-proof hovering architecture that creates a porous micro-climate of public open landscape. The Horizontal Skyscraper is one of the first LEED platinum rated buildings in Southern China and recently received a 2010 Good Design is Good Business China Award for Best Green project.

Knut Hamsun Center:

The Knut Hamsun Center, completed August 2009, is dedicated to Knut Hamsun and includes exhibition areas, a library and reading room, a café, and an auditorium. The building is conceived as an archetypal and intensified compression of spirit in space and light, concretizing a Hamsun character in architectonic terms.

The building uses the vernacular style as inspiration for reinterpretation. The stained black wood exterior skin is characteristic of the great wooden stave Norse churches. On the roof garden, bamboo refers to traditional Norwegian sod roofs in a modern way. The rough white-painted and the concrete interiors are characterized by diagonal rays of light calculated to ricochet through the section on certain days of the year.

The winning Design Award projects will be recognized at the annual Design Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, April 14th. All winning work will be exhibited at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place.

The Design Awards Exhibition will be on view from April 15 through July 3, 2010.
